Design of a switching module for electricity supply from solar to grid by sensing light intensity
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary1. INTRODUCTION
Electrical energy plays an important role in the growth of a country. Electrical energy is the lifeline of household, agricultural, industrial and almost every field. Economic growth of a country heavily depends upon the long-time availability of energy from low-cost and attainable resources. Because of urbanization and increase in population the world’s demand of energy is increasing rapidly. It is estimated that world’s demand of energy is increasing 1.7% per year and this demand will reach about 16.5 billion tons of oil equivalents (TOE) by 2030. Conventional resources that based on fossil fuels are decreasing and cost of these fuels is increasing. Another most important impact is that these fuels are big sources of air and noise pollution which are creating a lot of diseases and mental disturbance. The solution of these problems lies in renewable energy because it does not create pollutants and greenhouse gases.
Renewable energy is referred as clean energy which is environment friendly and less costly that can be obtained from natural resources or processes that are continuously replenished. For example, sunlight and wind that are shining and blowing. Solar energy and wind energy are types of renewable energy and here we concern only with the solar energy. The energy received by the earth from the sun is known as solar energy. This energy is received in the form of solar radiations and converted into electricity by means of photovoltaic (PV) cells. Human being is harnessing solar energy for thousands of years to grow the crops, stay warm and dry the grains. According to the NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATRY “more energy from the sun falls on the earth in one hour than is used by everyone in the world in one year”.
Solar energy is further classified into different categories and we concern with photovoltaic technology. Photovoltaic technology referred to directly convert sunlight into electricity using cells made of semiconductor material. Photovoltaic solar power plants can produce electricity on large scale that can be fed into power grids and can be used by industries that needs power on large scale.
?Automatic switching from solar to grid
?Collection of solar energy efficiently
?Operation and Maintenance management
?Usage of accurate light sensors
?Storage of energy for use in the absence of sunlight
4. PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
In this model, it is proposed the automatic switching of PV array by sensing intensity of sunlight directly. Now a days the commercially available systems depend upon the level of energy stored in energy storage unit (ESU) i.e. batteries. If stored energy is insufficient to entertain the load then system switches the load at grid. The proposed system depends directly on the intensity of sunlight. If the intensity of sunlight is optimum for required load then PV power will be used and the extra power will be stored by ESU. If sunlight’s intensity is not sufficient then it will move directly on grid instead of usage of energy from ESU. The stored energy of ESU will be used if grid is not available and sunlight is absent. This system will ensure the longtime availability of energy than previous systems.
?Long Time availability of energy
?Sufficient collection of energy
?Automatic switching
Technical Details of Final DeliverableWe will make an automatic system for switching of electricity supply whether sunlight is sufficient or not and it will increase efficiency of other equipments
