Project Title

Design fabrication and control of a multi fingered prosthetic hand with finger adduction and abduction

Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject Summary

The project involves the development of a prototype multi-fingered prosthetic hand for rehabilitation of people with upper limb amputations. The prosthetic hand will be driven by modern processor based intellegent control system. Each finger will have two degree of freedom actuation for achieving realistic grasp patterns. The end product will be functionally equivalent to the commercially available prosthetic hands.

Project Objectives

1- Design of individual finger.

2- Fabrication through 3D printing.

3- Design of individual finger derive mechanism to reduce power consumption and for better grip force.

4- Assembly, testing and revision of the design.

5- Torque control for individual finger.

6- Design of actuation mechanism for finger adduction and abduction.

7- Design of hand controller for individual/combined fingers for generation of various grasp patterns.

8- Design of GUI interface for testing/demonstration of the prosthetic hand.

Project Implementation Method

1- Literature review.

2- Design, fabrication and assembly of a single finger.

3- Torque control of a single finger.

4- Design of complete hand.

5- Assembly of hand.

6- Design of drive electronics.

7- Implementation of grasp patterns.

8- Design of Graphical User Interface for gesture selection.

9- Testing.

Benefits of the Project

The project focuses on the development of a multi-fingered prosthetic hand for upper limb rehabilitation. The end product will offer a complete prosthetic system at a fraction of the cost of commercially available systems. The project will also result in the grooming/development of indeginous resources for designing advanced prosthetic solutions.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of this project will consist of a multi-fingered prosthetic hand with the necessary interfaces to ensure reliable control. The elctronic module will be able to implement common grasp patterns. The PC software will allow interaction with the prosthetic hand in real time.
