Design And Prototype of Three Phase,All in One, Digital Different Relay for Lab Purpose

Project Area of Specialization

Project Summary

Engineers are always trying to make the things easier as much as possible, by pursuing the same spirit we are going to design three phase programmable differential relay for lab purpose.

The percentage differential principle is widely used to detect faults in transformers, generator, transmission line, motor and busbar and providing excellent results in improved security of the differential protection for external faults with CT saturation. This project describes a new algorithm for transformer, generator, transmission line, motor and busbar which will do differential protection of all these equipment’s,  with help of using different logics and techniques through which we are be able to do differential protection of these equipment with this all in one programmable differential relay. Moreover, to further see our differential protection security and best working condition we will deployed the protections on each and every equipment like transformer, transmission line, motor and static load, and thus analyze the result with and without fault and see when the system is faulty and the differential relay reacte to the fault and thus relay trip the system.

Project Objectives

  • The objective of fault detection differential relay is to isolate a faulty section of electrical power system from rest of the live system so that the rest portion can function satisfactorily without any severer damage due to fault current.
  • The aim is to design a relay which operates depending upon the difference between two or more similar electrical quantities of a like in transformer, transmission line, bus-bar and all labs related equipment.
  • To design a relay which is programmable and capable to do the required protection what user want by pressing the required protection code.
  • Fault detecting differential relay in development will be cost effective, efficient and usable on most of the devices of lab for protection.

Project Implementation Method

•Bus Bar simulation

•Transmission line simulation

•Static Load Simulation

•Generator Simulation

•Transformmer simulation

•Coding for Static Load Simulation

•Coding for Generator Simulation

•Coding for Motor Simulation

•Combine All Code in one,Make The Code Choosable.

Hardware Implementation

•Testing  phase of Differntial relay (Individual based)

•Testing  phase of Differntial relay (Combined)

•Solid Work design of relay

•Components assambling

•Finish product

Above four were the major milestones that we had to achieve. First of all we started with MATLAB simulation where we design all the mentioned protection to have simulation analysis then after that we replicate the same design to have Arduino coding for the design differential protection for transmission line, static load, motor and generator. Further we proceed toward Arduino coding of mentioned protection individually and successfully tested in PROTEUS simulation, once we done with individually based coding for equipment we marge the coding of mentioned protection by apply case statement which can give access to the required differential protection with the help of keypad where individual will click for required protection After that we finally headed towards hardware testing of differential protection of transformer ,motor, transmission line and generator Individually and then used the combined Arduino code to use it  for all mentioned protection once we done with testing phases we design final shape of differential relay on solidwork and resultantly we get with complete product.

Benefits of the Project

Our proposed relay will clear all the below problems,

  • No differential relay is available in market for lab purpose which is capable of doing differential protection of generator, motor, transmission line, transformer and bus bar with single design relay.
  • No Programmable differential relay is available which gives protection to generator, motor, transmission line, transformer and bus bar with single design relay.
  • Lack of Differential relay trainer.
  • Inrush current is the instantaneous high input current drawn from a power supply by electrical equipment at turn-on.
  • There may be a probability of mismatching in cable impedance from CT secondary to the remote relay panel.
  • Accurate matching of characteristics of current transformer cannot be achieved hence there may be spill current flowing through the relay in normal operating conditions.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

First of all we will start with MATLAB simulation where we design all the mentioned protection to have simulation analysis then after that we replicate the same design to have Arduino coding for the design differential protection for transmission line, static load, motor and generator. Further we will proceed toward Arduino coding of mentioned protection individually and successfully testing in PROTEUS simulation, once we done with individually based coding for equipment we marge the coding of mentioned protection by apply case statement which can give access to the required differential protection with the help of keypad where individual will click for required protection After that we finally will headed towards hardware testing of differential protection of transformer ,motor, transmission line and generator Individually and then used the combined Arduino code to use it  for all mentioned protection once we done with testing phases we design final shape of differential relay on solidwork and resultantly we will get with complete product.
