Design and Modeling of Pump Storage Power Plant Using Archimedes Turbine
Energy shortage poses a challenging threat for Pakistan. For meeting energy needs the country depends nearly 50% on the reserves of natural gas nearly all of which are being exploited. A developing country where further industrialization is in progress, the industrial sector, currently, consumes 55% of the total energy. About seventy percent of population lives in villages, most of which are not receiving electricity services to the date and the overall energy demand is expected to increase by a factor of over seven by 2030.
Now a day’s most of the developing countries utilizing the abundantly available renewable energy resources in order to overcome the energy crisis in their country. The implementation of economics projects, to tackle this energy and provide a support system to the accelerate demand from the conventional sources, is rare. Fast consumption of fossil fuel resources and the environmental concerns associated with them make electricity generation from certain cyclic resources progressively vital for the future. Due to the global warming and the increase of both global power consumption and oil prices, generation of renewable and environmental energy is being promoted and subsidized worldwide. There are many forms of harvesting eco-friendly and renewable sources , with hydro-power being its most mature and largest source of renewable power. The power plants simply convert the energy from flowing water into electricity.
This project represents a system completely running on renewable energy source. The system comprises of a gear-box , generator coupled with Archimedes Turbine with the help of shaft. It uses the canals water or water at inclined which helps turbine to rotate and at the end a clean & economic electrical energy is produced. The whole system works with the water at inclined hence visible large in size ,flexible and ‘Plug n Play’ .The system is named as “Pump Storage Power Plant Using Archimedes Turbine”.
Our country is blessed with many such sites where water is available in the form of inclined and downstream .Most of the sites are located in Kashmir ,KPK, Chitral , Gilgit ,Baluchistan ,Narran and Kaghan .Archimedes Hydropower system can be beneficial of those areas where transmission lines are not available are not available ,damaged or difficult to install .It is useful in supplying electricity to distance areas where there is no infrastructure for electrical transmission ,distribution & utilization .
These mechanisms are capable of supplying continuous power at every time .Through the power output is limited to some KW but the series installation of such systems can accumulate a greater power that can be used for residential or industrial too.
1)Our objective is to generate electricity from falling water to increase the pressure of water by moving the screw .
2)It can be the best economical option particularly in rural areas .
3)Screw turbine as hydro power generation will solve the problem for where still lack of electricity .

Technology Transfer:
In Rural areas where the transmission line is not available then one unit or multiple units (domestic) can be installed to generate the electricity and transfer the technology where there is still lack of electricity .
Methodology:
The river water flows into the top of the screw and starts the initial rotation of screw pump while water keep moving down as the length of the screw. The hydrostatic pressure from water on the screw surface causes it to turn . A gear box increases the screw speed up to generator speed and generator convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Archimedes Turbine blades are designed in such a way that each blade supports the whole structure in the process of generation as well as pumping that why is called as Reversible Turbine having the highest efficiency.As we know that the Archimedes turbine is an intelligent reversible turbine so the purpose of pump storage we use a pump or the turbine can also use for the purpose of pumping water during the base load hours.

This project will be beneficial for specially the people living in Rural areas where their is no transmission line and lack of electricity .
It would help them in their regular need of the electricity .
It would boost the countries economy as their will be no transmission cost and no fuel ,coal cost in the running of the turbine .
