Design and implementation of Low Noise Amplifier
Low noise amplifier designed in this project is for the frequency range of 2.39 to 2.41 GHz with a bandwidth of 20MHz. First a model of LNA is drawn on the Advanced Design System software to get the required results but these results were based on the ideal situation. Then the circuit is converted into real time components having transmission lines in it and then the simulation is run to get the required results. When the required results are obtained then the circuit is implemented on the hardware.
The purpose of this project is to design a low noise amplifier (LNA) with a minimum possible low noise figure and high performance as much as possible. The main purpose is to design a low noise amplifier for the good performance of transmitter module or receiver module of radars, satellites etc. The frequency range used for this design is 2.39 to 2.41 GHz. In this project, low noise amplifier is designed at central frequency of 2.4GHz with a bandwidth of 20MHz. Due to the increase in the demand of the users, there is more need of cost efficient and a reliable system which can provide good services to the densely populated areas. The main objective of the project is to design a low noise amplifier at the receiving end of the antenna. The signal is received by the antenna at the receiver. It is then amplified by the low noise amplifier. Low noise amplifier also affect the whole receiving system as it is the first part of the receiving module.
The low noise amplifier designed in this project is mainly for the microwave frequencies and mainly focus on the noise figure and gain at the center frequency of the signal. The low noise amplifier increases the gain of the signal as much as possible by not affecting the minimum noise figure required. The gain of the low noise amplifier is sometimes compromised to get the minimum required noise figure.
First of all, a model of the low noise amplifier is drawn on the advanced design software having both active and passive components. Then the simulation is run to get the required results. After that the circuit is converted into transmission lines whose length and width is calculated using line calculator. the length and width of the transmission lines also depends on the frequency on which we are working. After the conversion of the circuit the results will change because now we are getting the results based on real time. Then modifications is done into the circuit to get the required results. After that the gerber file is created of the circuit and finally the circuit is implemented on the hardware.
The benefits of this project are as follows:
This low noise amplifier will give a low noise figure as well as a high gain which is very difficult to achieve.
The centre frequency of the amplifier is 2.4GHz which is an unlicensed frequency range so anyone can work on it as no license is required.
This low noise amplifier can be used in a circuit having a narrowband frequency range.
The final deliverable will consist of a RF transistor ATF-36077 and a FET which is used in active biasing of the circuit. In biasing circuit resistors and capacitors are used. The biasing technique used in this circuit is common emitter. Moreover in input and output matching networks, resistors and inductors are used. The noise figure of this low noise amplifier will be less than 2dB and the gain of this amplifier will be greater than 10dB.
