Due to the consequences of climate change, Pakistan has already been designated as the seventh most sensitive region in the world. One of the major factors in deteriorating air quality in Pakistan is the transportation sector. Day by day the cost of oil import is exceeding which in turn creates a huge load on the economy of the country as well. Countries all over the world have realized the significance of Electric vehicles (EV) so they have decided to gradually incorporate EVs into their transport sector. EVs are becoming a more suitable way for transportation in the near future, but the limited range of batteries in the sense of capacity is a challenge that needs to be addressed. In order to deal with the capacity of the battery issues, a fast charger can be utilized but this solution is too many expensive options and especially for a country like Pakistan. The swapping of batteries after full discharge is a good option that can be done on a nearby battery swapping station. This station will remove the discharged battery and replace the battery with one that has already been charged. This method of refuelling electric vehicles has the advantage that it is very quick for each vehicle since the driver only has to wait for the battery to be swapped and not for the battery to be charged. This idea of a swappable battery will reduce the overall cost of an EV because the customer will not purchase it himself with the purchase of an EV. This idea of a swappable battery will also help in reducing the travelling cost as compared to traditional vehicles.
Project ObjectivesIn Pakistan, the transportation industry is the major contributor to the emission of Green House Gases (GHGs) into the ozone. In the past few years, the transportation sector has undergone double-digit growth. Almost the entire transportation market is focused on oil-based goods, and the nation spends billions of dollars per annum on oil imports. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming a more suitable way of transportation in the near future, but the limited range of batteries in the sense of capacity is a challenge that needs to be addressed. This energy storage and effective utilization issue can be addressed to some extent with the usage of lithium-ion batteries instead of using Lead-acid batteries and with fast charging of batteries by using fast chargers. But both solutions are too expensive options and especially for underdeveloped countries.The idea of a swappable battery will reduce the cost of a vehicle because the end-user doesn’t have to purchase the battery pack and it will not only reduce the overall cost of electric bikes only, will also be helpful in 2 to 3-wheeler commercials vehicles due to cheap running and maintenance costs. It will help the end customer as well due to less travelling cost. The main objective of this project is to develop an electric bike with a swappable battery system.
Project Implementation MethodThis swapping of batteries can be done even during a trip, when a user came to the battery-swapping station he will get a fully charged battery. An android based application can be helpful here which can be developed for the end-user to show the status of availability of battery at different swapping stations. An RFID can also be introduced to manage the different status of battery packs like date of purchase, utilization, capacity and different logs etc. This android based application will not only be helpful to show the availability of fully charged batteries at different stations, but it will also help the end-user to reserve the batteries at the swapping station and plan the trip accordingly.
