The population is increasing day by day, which gives in lack of public awareness of a healthy environment and this has been creating health issues all over the world. The world is increasingly getting smarter and looking for secure, perception and smart conclusion of resource optimization to increase the quality of consumer life. This necessity has led to the development of smart and safe cities connecting the virtual world to the physical, bring real-time services that modify to real-time situations. The smart city is an emerging concept used all over the world with different nomenclatures context & meanings.  A smart city is a town that is well planned, and it provides cost-efficient services, environmental efficiency, and technological sound services for the welfare of the citizens. Smart solutions can help control the ever-increasing population in the cities. The system employs an Arduino UNO board, LDR sensor, Ultrasonic sensor, IR sensors, fingerprint module, Motor shield, Dc and Servo motors, water pump, LEDs, Flame Sensor, wifi module,  etc. while six main contributions are presented in this work. Firstly, we show that the streetlights can be controlled based on the night and the object’s detection. In which the streetlights automatically turn to DIM state at night-time and set to HIGH state on object’s detection, while during day-time the streetlights will remain OFF. Secondly, Home automation in which the appliances will be controlled with an android application using the Bluetooth module, and also have a security alarm system. Thirdly, Fingerprint based Door security system in which the gate will only open if the fingerprint matching. Fourthly, a traffic signal control which switches the traffic during peak and also has automatic challan system if the car violates the signal, it will take a picture of the number plate and save it. Fifthly, in sensitive areas, there is an automatic fire alarm and control system in which the automatic water sprinkles throws on the fire. Lastly, a digital online notice board system that displays current affairs about the city: also, an automatic city canal bridge that operates on basic needs and most importantly, a counter is set that will count the number of objects passed through the road. We are much confident that our proposed systems are ef?cient, reliability, and cost-effective. We say that the proposed systems can be easily tested and implemented under real conditions at large-scale shortly, that will be useful in the future applications for smart cities automation and smart homes. 

Project Objectives

  1. Streetlights working over the whole night consumes much energy, so we aim to design an automatic Street lights control system to save energy.
  2. In homes, it is much tricky and challenging for the disabled and aged peoples to operate appliances. So, we will implement a system to control appliances through mobile while sitting at any location.  
  3. Security is a significant problem these days, so we aim a biometric-based security system to open the door and a thief control system to detect and alarm unusual movement to prevent major losses. 
  4. Controlling traffic is a challenging issue in big cities, so there is an automatic system to control traffic and automatic challan system if someone violates signal. 
  5. It is a big issue for the fire brigade to reach at the location within due time if a fire occurs in any area of the city, So we will implement a fire detection system to spray water sprinkles and send the location to the fire brigade station through SMS. 
  6. As a workload increases, people do not have time for any information about the city. So, there will be a digital notice board which will display the current affairs and the information about the cities such as events, crime updates and weather forecast, etc. 

Project Implementation Method

In this work, we will use Arduino microcontroller as a principal component. In the street lights, we use LDR sensors to detect the intensity of light,  so it will turn the dim lights if it detects it is night time and turn off the lights if it detects if its day time. IR sensor is used for the detection of object movements, and if it is night time and the sensor identify the vehicle in front of it, it will change the brightness of lights from dim to high and if there is no motion detected in front of sensors the lights will remain dimmed.we will count total vehicle passed from the roads with the help of IR sensors,  by using counter.  In-home automation, we will use a relay module that is connected through Bluetooth with an android mobile application to control difference appliance such as TV, Fan, Ac, etc. When the user wants to turn on the appliance, it will give a command on the mobile, and the corresponding relay module will be turned on. There will be a motion and sound detection system implemented in the house to detect unusual activities. If the system detects some suspicious activities, it will turn on the alarm. In a biometric door security system, we will use a fingerprint module to ensure the authorize access and operates the door. If the user fingerprint matches to the predefined fingerprint, it will open the door. Otherwise, it will alarm, and the door will remain closed. After opening the door, it will automatically close it after five seconds. In a traffic control signal, we will control the traffic lights through programming, and if there no vehicle detected on the corresponding road through ultrasonic sensor it will skip this signal, and it will check and turn on the next corresponding signal. If the signal is red and the vehicle violates the signal, there is a camera embedded that will capture the number plate of that vehicle and save it database for the challan. In a fire alarm system, we will use the GSM module, water pump and there will be a fire detection system which detects the fire. If it detects the fire, it will turn on the fire alarm and the water pump to start throwing water sprinkles on the fire and also send a location to the fire brigade through SMS. In the online notice board, we use LCD to display the information for the citizens. There will be a temperature and humidity sensors that will also display there captured values on the LCD. In the automatic bridge system, we will use the servo motors to turn on and off the bridge.

Benefits of the Project

Automation systems have the advantage over the manual systems because it increases productivity, ef?ciency, and reliability, and minimizes the usage of resources to save energy, and reduce the operating cost, etc. These automation systems play an essential role in the term “smart cities” to make our daily life more comfortable. The traditional light system has been limited to two options: ON and OFF only, which are not ef?cient because these kinds of operations meant power loss due to continuing to work on maximum voltage. With the negligence of the operator or by some other technical problems, streetlights are continuously kept ‘ON,’ even when there is no light required on the streets, and this leads to the wastage of electricity. Hence, the wastage of power from street lights is one of the noticeable power losses, but the benefits of our system are to lead to many new methods of energy and money saving. Managing all of your home devices from one place is a major benefit of our project. Being able to keep all of the technology in your home connected through one interface is a massive step forward for technology and home management. Our Smart home systems tend to be wonderfully flexible when it comes to the accommodation of new devices and appliances and other technology. Don’t underestimate the power of being able to control your home’s functions from a distance. On an exceptionally hot day, you can order your house to become cooler in just enough time before you get home from work. Door Security is a big issue these days, so our main benefit regards are to improve this door security with the biometric system. The door will only open if the fingerprint matches to the owner. Controlling traffic is a major issue these days. In previous systems, the signal is green if there is no traffic on the corresponding road. So, our main benefits are to control traffic signal if there no vehicle detected on the corresponding road through ultrasonic sensor it will skip this signal, and it will check and turn on the next corresponding signal, and it will help us to reduce the time consumption at the road signals. It is a big issue for the fire brigade to reach the location within due time if a fire occurs in any area of the city. So, the benefit of our system is to detect a fire and spray water sprinkles immediately on the flame and send the location to the fire brigade station through SMS, and this let the fire brigade reached the fire location in no time. As the workload increases on the peoples, they do not have much time to know the information about their city. Newspapers and tv Channels only display information about big cities. Our benefits of this system are to display the knowledge of their town for the citizens. It will show the daily temperature and other necessary information and also alert for natural disasters.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The proposed systems will be designed as a lab-scale prototype to experimentally validate the efficiency, accuracy, and affordability of the systems. The experimental results will prove that the proposed work has all in one capability (street light automation, home automation, bio-metric door system, traffic control system, fire alarm system and Online Information Display System) is very easy to use, and can be easily assembled in a simple hardware circuit. We remark that the proposed systems can be implemented under real conditions at large-scale in the future, which will be useful in smart cities applications.
