Design and Implementation of A Remote Controlled Electric Road Sweeper
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryA grubby surrounding imposes a detrimental effect on the beauty of our environment. Leaves fallen from the trees and debris scattered on roads, passages and other places are unfavorable for the beauty of a clean environment. Collecting them could be time consuming and difficult depending on weather conditions and wetness. Road sweeping has always been a problem in cities. In past, many methods of road cleaning have been used, from human labor to heavy mechanical machines. Human workforce has always been a primary tool for cleaning of the roads.
Hiring a large workforce to clean this debris on the roads, parks and streets and pay them as well seems very costly and tiring job. Though this method is suitable for small and less populated areas, but in large cities where traffic is enormous this method is not proficient, but it takes a lot of time and is very expensive.
Focusing on the above-mentioned issues many technologies have had been developed through years. Sweeping Machines were created in 19th century to do the job more efficiently. The street sweeper was designed with primary objective to remove rubbish from streets. Conventional sweeping vehicles are designed to operate on Internal Combustion (IC) engines which are proving to be more and more expensive and polluting with increasing fuel costs and increasing global warming. It's important to realize that there are different technologies behind every sweeper for different industries and purpose of street sweeping.
This Project is specifically designed for regular use in university premises. Our university already have a diesel engine mechanical road sweeper, but it’s never used because operational cost is too greater than required output, So a large workforce is used daily to clean all the leaves and dust on the roads. Our intended vehicle is light wait, easy to operate, required operational time and very low operational cost. It can be used on daily basis which will save a lot of precious resources for university administration.
This project was carried out in order to design and fabricate a battery powered RSV, equipped with scrubber system. Various designs were studied and depending on their advantages and disadvantages the best design was selected. After designing different parts of the machine such as chases, the tank, arrangement of the scrubber brushes and placement of the controlling circuitry of the vehicle, they were analyzed. The required power for various parts of the system was calculated and compared with a typical road sweeper vehicle power requirement.
Project ObjectivesThis project is aimed at designing and fabricating an electrical road sweeping vehicle that can both maintain its operational efficiency and stick to its task along with the following major objectives;
- To make the machine cost effective, easy to operate and reasonably light weight.
- To lower operational cost and time as minimum as possible also achieve satisfactory cleaning in less time by increasing efficiency as much as possible.
- To make it eco-friendly and noise free.
Initially the proposed road sweeper machine is intended to be controlled by an Android phone. It does not involve a video feature capability yet. This circuitry consists on two parts, receiver part and transmitter part, Figure 3.1 and 3.2 explains the idea of control circuitry.
- Receiver part:

- Transmitter Part:

Benefits of the Project- It can save a lot of resources and manpower.
- It can be used in medical, educational institutes and commercial places like malls where noise free cleaning is a necessity.
- In future it can be upgraded to fully automated operation make it a lot more efficient.
- As it is battery powered, hence it is can be used indoors.
