Design and Fabrication of surface to surface guided rocket
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryDesign and fabrication of surface to surface guided rocket conforms primarily to space exploration and defense purposes. A guided rocket consists of a controls system, a propulsion system and rocket structure . The controls system is based upon arduino microcontroller which controls four control surfaces using servo motors. The propulsion system is based upon a solid fuel made up of potassium nitrate and sucrose. A recovery system ( parachute ) will be installed for safe recovery. Both design and fabrication is to be done.
Project Objectives1.To successfuly propel the rocket above 500 meters or more vertically.
2.To guide the rocket to a prescribed point up to a range of 700 meters or above.
3. To safely recover the rocket
Project Implementation Method1. Controls system is based upon arduino microcontroller controlling up to four servo motors to actuate control surfaces.
2. Mixture of potassium nitrate and sucrose ( table sugar ) is to be used as propellant / fuel.
3.Rocket body will be made of sheet metal.
4. Rocket nozzle will be fabricated using stainless steel on lathe machine
5. Combustion chamber is also to be made of steel .
6. A launch platform will be fabricated for accurate launch.
Benefits of the ProjectThe benefits of this project are:
1.Implementation of a system which relates to space exploration.
2. Implementation of a system which is important aspect of defense.
3. A very challenging project which will polish our skills and abilities learnt during the degree.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable1. The rocket will be 5 feet long
2. Diameter of rocket will be 4 inches.
3. 4 servo motors will be used.
4. Trapezoidal fins will be used.
5. Canard configuration will be employed.
