IOT based Smart Wheelchair for Disable people
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryPeople suffering from certain permanent disabilities due to accidents, paralysis or old age often require extra care from other people with respect to movement and heath monitoring issues. Providing an access to the remote health services using a health monitoring system enhances their independence, since their health is regularly recorded and monitored by the caretaker without any efforts. By accessing the services online, the concerned person can monitor the location and current health status of the patient. Since disabled patients cannot afford to travel, smart healthcare systems help them gain access to healthcare systems. A possible solution to monitor their health status is by developing a health monitoring system based on a smart wheelchair.
The proposed system uses a Motor to control the movement of the wheelchair by getting access to the patient’s current location. The Android application installed in smart screen will allow access to patient’s location using camera. The patient’s current health status is monitored by using the details received from health monitoring sensors over the cloud.
Project ObjectivesThe objective of the present work is to develop a smart sensing wheelchair by implementing sensors within its structures. The technology adopted is Internet of Things wherein the heart rate, blood pressure and location are detected by sensors, processed by embedded systems and sent to the cloud. The care taker can remotely access disable person’s device using android application installed on smart device connected to the wheelchair and can also move derive the wheelchair in limited area with the help of motor.
The proposed system replaces the traditional effort required for taking care of disable people. Traditionally, a fulltime care taker is required for movement of a disable person and also requires health monitoring apparatus, the proper use and accuracy of health monitoring apparatus in order to monitor the health status of a patient. The proposed system is more reliable and efficient as it uses sensors to monitor the health status of patient and motor for movement of wheelchair. Moreover the proposed system reduces effort and increase accuracy.
Project Implementation MethodSoftware Specification
The software requirements are:
- Window PC/OS
- Arduino IDE
- visual studio
- Android studio
- Python , C#
Hardware Specification
The hardware requirements are:
- Arduino ATMega328(microcontroller)
- Laptop Configuration
- Camera
- WIFI module(ESP8266)/internet connection
- Moving Camera
- Smart Device
- Sensor for Blood Pressure
- Motor
- Sensor for Heart rate
- Temperature sensor
The proposed system will allow the care taker to access and monitor the health of a disable person from anywhere on the basis of receiving details from the cloud.
Furthermore, the concerned person can also access the location of patient through GSM in the smart screen so that concerned person can monitor the patient’s location remotely and concerned person can also move the patient to desired location.
The care taker always gets notified via an Alert in case of abnormality in the health status of patient.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe proposed system will be a Smart product with an Android Application.
This work aimed at developing an inexpensive smart wheelchair by integrating a microcontroller-based health monitoring system to a regular wheelchair, to control the movement of wheelchair and monitor the health status of patient using heart rate, Blood Pressure. This work is carried out to develop a smart wheelchair based on a traditional one by implementing sensors within its structure.
The aim was to develop an inexpensive and easy use health monitoring wheelchair, which enables patients with disabilities to be monitored by the concerned person and also enable the disable person to be in contact with care taker via Alert service. Thus, by sensing the heart rate, processing the data and sending the information to the cloud, the patient’s care taker can keep a track of the health of the patient.
