Design and Fabrication of Small Scale Hydrokinetic Power Generating System
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryThis project is basically about power generation. We will utalize the kinetic energy of water flow to generate power. Since the world is focusing on power generation t=from renewable energy sources and using water is a renewable and Eco-friendly energy source. This setup can be installed in irrigation canals or any other water channels. Unlike conventional hydropower generation setup, we will be making a zero head hydrokinetic power generating system which is purely utalize the kinetic energy of flowing water. This project will focus on the power supply to remote areas (small scale).
How this project will work? This System will have a cross flow turbine having a runner and a nozzle. Water will first flow through the nozzle, which will increase its flow rate and will strike the turbine blades(converting kinetic energy of water into mechanical energy). this will rotate the turbine and hence the shaft connected to the turbine gets rotated with it. the shaft is then connected to the generator through gear or belt and pulley mechanism. this will rotate the coil in the dynamo, hence the mechanical energy of the shaft will convert into electrical energy.
Project ObjectivesThe aim and Objective of this project is to produce electric power from flowing water, for that we will design and fabricate the system. the project will focus on the electric power supply to remote areas, as in Pakistan many of our remote areas are deprived of electricity. so by making use of the flowing water(kinetic energy) they will be able to produce their own electricity. since it a small scale project, so we will make a system that will generate around 500 Watts of electric power.
Project Implementation MethodThe project can be implemented to any flowing water channels, depending upon the velocity and flow rate of water. it can fullfill the electricity requirements of remote areas.
Benefits of the Projectthe benefits of the project are:
- A cheap source of power can be produced
- Water is a renewable souce of energy so this project will be environmental friendly project.
- Through this project the remote areas can get electric power.
- This project can be a good choice to make investment in so it is also commercially beneficial.
- Cross Flow Turbines are more economical than other hydro turbines, they can be easily manufactured and installed.
the Methadology will be followed:
- designing of cross flow turbine
- material selection
- fabrication
- testing
- results and discussion
