Design and Fabrication of Exhaust Gas Analyzer for IC Engine
Discharge of hazardous gases from engine exhaust brings unnatural weather change which is
an alarming threat to the whole world and furthermore to the health of wellbeing. Diesel have
higher productivity than the petrol or gasoline, that is the reason now-a-days, the utilization of
diesel motors is higher than petrol motors. The Hazardous gases from these engine exhaust
brings unnatural environmental changes and causes different disease. Exhaust gases being
discharged depends on the engine and fuel being used. So, we are going to design and fabricate
a Portable Exhaust Gas Analyzer device to know the degree of variety of exhaust fumes
discharges (Carbon monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, Hydrocarbons, Nitrogen oxides, Sulphur
dioxide etc.) in IC engines, especially in Diesel engine. The device comprises of sensors to
detect CO2, CO, SO2, NO, NO2, HC gases. The temperature range of used sensors are in
between 25 to 300 oC. Arduino chip to process the data from sensors, thermocouple-based
exhaust gas temperature detector to measure exhaust gases temperature, Pressure measuring
device, Flow meter to measure flow rate of exhaust gases entering the analyzer and some other
additional components. Results are displayed on LCD unit.
• Design and fabricate the portable automated exhaust gas analyzer for detection of
exhaust gases from IC engine.
• To investigate the concentration of each exhaust gas from IC engine
arrangement of different components of the
exhaust gas analyzer. It consists of siX sensors which
detects and calculates the concentration of carbon
monoxide, nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons. Other
sensors are further introduced latterly. This
proposed design is compact and easy to maintain
with little considerations. An Arduino chip is
installed to works as a microprocessor and performs
arithmetic and logical operation. An LCD unit is
also introduced to display the concentration of
engine exhaust gasses.
By using the emission gas analyzer, we come to know,
1. Unburned gases coming out of vehicle exhaust.
2. Concentration of each gas.
Once we counter the concentration of different exhaust gases and told them to higher
authorities. They will take action and make some regulations for the vehicle manufacturing
companies to work on a specific standard that will not harm the environment through engines
exhaust. Once, this done the pollution decreases and risk of respiratory disease reduced which
directly benefits the humans and it is a big achievement. Ozone layer depletion slows down
and moves toward recovery. The risk of acid rain decreases to a minimum level.
