Design and Fabrication of Energy Harvesting Lat pull-down Machine
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryTo preserve the natural environment and non-reusable natural sources of energy such as fossil fuel, crude oil, etc. it is necessary to develop a culture and come up with new methods to conserve and produce energy effectively, therefore we came up with the idea of making a power generating gym machine.
Project ObjectivesThe objective of this project is to harness the electrical energy by human workout on push down machine and store it in to battery bank for later use. To acheive this, a portable mechanism is designed and fabricated that can be attached to the existing pushdown machine found in the gyms with minor modifications.
Project Implementation MethodA push down machine has a linear motion, to convert that motion into rotatory rack and pinion mechasim is used. To generate electrical energy, a generator is used to convert the rotation in to electricity.
Benefits of the ProjectThis project can help in sustaining the electricty requirement of a gym up to 50%, which can collabratively contribute in lessing the load on the grid if implemented on large scale. The system will also motivate the trainers to work effectively if they know that electricity is being generated through their exercise and will give social awareness that how much of work is required to generate a single watt.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableAfter completion of this project, a portable mechanism will be fabricated which can be easily attached or detached to an existing pushdown machine for completely charging a battery of 12v/7Ah through pushdown exercise in a time frame depending on the load lifted and number of repitions. In this project, a load of 15 kg is considered and 36 reps/sessions are done which can charge this battery in 8 hours. The fully charged battery can store 84Wh of energy and can light up a LED bulb of 12W for 7 hours.
