Project Summary

The proposed project involves the design and fabrication of an Automatic White Board Cleaner System. This project has the ability to automatically clean the white board by using lead screw mechanism. The design of the project is carried out in CAD Software (Creo 5.0) and the fabrication is done by using Melamine Sheet. The project consists of four lead screws which are separately connected with bushes and metal rods. The lead screws are placed inside an external frame which is mounted on the top of the white board. For clarity, four DC power window motors are used which are individually connected with switches. The motors are used for the rotation of the lead screws. These motors are driven by using two motor drivers and are controlled by using microcontroller (STM32F103C8T6). The LCD is installed on the top right corner of the whiteboard showing the cleaning status of the white board. 

Project Objectives

  • Design of Automatic White Board Cleaner System using CAD Software (Creo5.0).
  • Fabrication of White Board Cleaner System using Malamine sheet.
  • Implementation of Lead Screw mechanism. 
  • Integration of STM Microcontroller to control the DC Power Window Motor for erasing the white Board.

Project Implementation Method

The main objective of this project is to automatically erase the white board. The proposed white board is divided into four sections. Each section contains a separate lead screw. The bushes and metal rods are connect with each lead screw and the duster is connect with each metal rod. To rotate the lead screws, four DC Power window motors are separately connect with each lead screw. The motors are driven by using two motor drivers and the microcontroller (STM32F103C8T6) is used to control these motors. For the sake of clarity, four swichtes are connected to turn ON/OFF the motors. For erasing any particular section, the corresponding switch will be turn ON and the corresponding motor will be active for erasing that section. Furthermore, a special type switch known as a double pole double throw switch is used to turn ON /OFF all the motors simultaneously. The main purpose of using a double pole double throw switch is that it will turn ON/OFF all DC power window motors and erase the complete white board.

1. Microcontroller(STM32F103C8T6):

Microcontrollers is an integrated circuit that contains a microprocessor along with memory and associated circuits and that controls some or all of the functions of an electronic device (such as a home appliance) or systemThe cortex-m3 processor is specifically developed for high-performance, low-cost platforms for a broad range of devices. 

Specifications:

  • The devices operate from a 2.0 to 3.6 V Power Supply.
  • 32-bit RISC core operating at a 72MHz Frequency.
  • High-speed embedded memories. Flash memory up to 128 Kbytes and SRAM up to 20 Kbytes.
  • Two 12-bit ADCs, three general-purpose 16-bit timers plus one PWM timer.
  • Advanced communication interfaces: up to two I2Cs and SPIs, three UARTs and a CAN.

DC Power Window Motor (ACI 83094):

DC motors take electrical power through direct current, and convert this energy into mechanical rotation. When the switch is pressed, electricity is sent to the motor which raises and lowers the window along a track. The motor turns several gears which cause a long arm to move up or down

Motor Driver (L293D)

The Motor Driver is a module for motors that allows you to control the working speed and direction of two motors simultaneously.

  •  Supply Voltage Range 12V
  •  36V Output current capability per driver 
  •  Pulsed Current 1.2-A Per Driver

Lead Screw:

A lead screw (or lead screw), also known as a power screw or translation screw, is a screw used as a linkage in a machine, translating motion into linear motion. Leadscrews are manufactured in the same way as other thread forms (they may be rolled, cut, or ground).

Specifications:

  • Lead screw Diameter is 1/4"
  • Maximum Available Travel is 8"
  • The maximum load (including inertial) is 30lb
  • Working load (including inertial) is 8lb

16x2 LCD:

LCD (liquid crystal display) is a type of flat panel display which uses liquid crystals in its primary form of operation

Specifications:

  • Operating voltage is 4.7V to 5.3v.
  • Current consumption is 1mA without backlight.             
  • Can work on both 8-bit and 4-bit mode.

Switch (2 Pin ON/OFF):

Widely applied to control all kinds of household appliances such as water dispenser, treadmill, coffee pot and so on. SPST on-off control and 2 terminals rocker switch.

Specifications: 

  • 2.3cm/1.14?x0.90?(approx)
  • Mounting hole diameter: 20-22mm

Double Pole Double Throw Switch:

A double pole double throw (DPDT) switch consists of six terminals, two of which are independent input terminals. Each of the poles can complete two different circuits. In other words, each input terminal connects with two output terminals, and all four output terminals are separate.

Specifications: 

  • Current Rating: 10/5A.
  • Voltage Rating: 125/250VAC.
  • Dielectric Strength: 3000VAC.
