Project Title

Design and fabrication of automated creep testing machine

Project Area of Specialization

Mechatronics Engineering

Project Summary

Creep testing machine will be modified to a low cost, electro-mechanicallyoperated creep testing machine  will be capable of determining the creep properties of aluminum, lead and thermoplastic materials as a function of applied stress, time and temperature. Success in today’s market requires improvement in efficiency, quality and accuracy of testing facilities and testing equipment. The machine will provide a low cost solution for Mechanics of Materials laboratories interested in creep testing experiment  and demonstration. In the present study, the challenge will be overcome by developing an electromechanical creep testing machine to conduct creep tests. The apparatus consists of four primary systems which are the load application system, the heat generation and control system, the strain measuring system and then the frame and the Specimen grip. The design process for a creep testing machine is presented along with the material selection of grips for high temperature tensile tests. We have  to design such a machine which will use to check material’s life at low cost.

Project Objectives

The aim and objective of this work to show the load variation on creep rate and failure. and also show the temperature effect on creep rate for lead, Aluminum and other materials. And also create a time-extension curve for all materials.

  1. To design and automate an electro-mechanical creep testing machine.
  2. To design the model of  an electromechanical creep testing machine by using SOLIDWORKS / ABAQUS.
  3. To study the creep behavior of different materials like lead, aluminum, piezoelectric and polypropylene  etc.
  4. To perform the numerical analysis of material using MATLAB Simulink.

To compare experimental data of different materials

Project Implementation Method

Benefits of the Project

1. A creep-testing machine measures the creep (the tendency of a material after being subjected to high levels of stress, e.g. high temperatures, to change its form in relation to time) of an object. It is a device that measures the alteration of a material after it has been put through different forms of stress. Creep machines are important to see how much strain (load) an object can handle under pressure, so engineers and researchers are able to determine what materials to use. The device generates a creep time-dependent curve by calculating the steady rate of creep in reference to the time it takes for the material to change. Creep machines are primarily used by engineers to determine the stability of a material and its behavior when it is put through ordinary stresses.

2. Creep machines are most commonly used in experiments to determine how efficient and stable a material is. The machine is used by students and companies to create a creep curve on how much pressure and stress a material can handle. The machine is able to calculate the stress rate, time and pressure.

3. This creep machine is especially used to check materials life. And also we can check how much material extend when different forces applied .

For example, in earthquake buildings can be save when you know about its extension.

4. Fully automatic operation with test force speed, displacement and deformation controlled.

5. Creep deformation is important not only in systems where high temperatures are endured such as nuclear power plants, jet engines and heat exchangers, but also in the design of many everyday objects.

For example, metal paper clips are stronger than plastic ones because plastic creep at room temperature.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Creep is time dependent deformation of a material. Creep machines are used to check the life of  different materials. This electromechanical automated creepmachine has been designed to test different materials like aluminum, lead and  propylene. A stepper motor is used to apply load on specimen. it is also known as a step motor, that divides a full rotation into a number of equal steps. Arduino is used to control the whole circuity of electromechanical creep testing machine. Two inputs of Arduino one is power supply, which is used to energies the controller and second input is potentiometer’s output. There is one output and by using this output we will make a graph on excel by using PLX-DAQ software. This software interfaces with Arduino and hence, we can get graph on excel. And by using this graph, we can examine the properties of a material. Later on, we can compare the result of these graphs We used potentiometer as a displacement transducer which will tell us about the material extension which is being tested inside the heat chamber. Heat chamber is the main part of automated electro-mechanical creep  testing machine in which we will put our specimen  to check the behavior of a material. A heat chamber is the part which is used to provide heat for a process or can serve as reactor and also it provides the heats of reaction. Heat chamber designs vary as to its function, heating duty, type of fuel and method of  introducing combustion air. Heat chamber is hanged in the center of machine. After applying load and different temperature material will deform This deformation, will get on Arduino by using a   potentiometer. Now, we connect a computer system which is interfaced with a Arduino by using PLX- DAQ software. Now, we are able to get different readings on applying different loads and temperatures and show their relation by using graph.
