Design and Fabrication of an Actively Controlled Prosthetic Hand
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryA prosthetic hand is an artificial device that replaces a missing hand, which may be lost through trauma, disease, or a condition present at birth (congenital disorder). The objective of this project is to design fabricate and analyze a prosthetic hand that can be either controlled passively, actively or using some hybrid control system. The students of this project will learn how to design a prosthetic device, control using Arduino of some other microelectronic device, and fabrication of biomedical devices.
Project Objectives- Design and analysis of an active prosthetic hand.
- Full hand design including 4 functional fingers and thumb.
- Arduino based feedback control.
- Cost-efficient prosthetic hand.
- Basic mechanism and structure design using CAD softwares.
- Mechanism analysis of the initial design.
- Analysis using Finite Element Method (FEM).
- Control process design using EMG signals as input.
- Fabrication of actively control prosthetic hand using rapid prototyping methodology.
- Providing functional prosthetic limbs to amputees enabling them to perform general day to day tasks.
- Non-surgical method for controlling active prosthetic through EMG signals.
- Reduced cost by manufacturing the product through modern manufacturing methods.
Our final deliverable will consist of an actively controlled prosthetic hand with fully operational 4 fingers and a thumb (operational). We are aiming to design a prosthetic hand which will be controlled by Electromagnetic signals (EMG).
