DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF A ROCKET ENGINE TEST BED
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryRocket motors are one of the important forms of propulsion systems used in the aviation industry. Detailed design of rocket engines, as well as their various sub-systems, are routinely taught at undergraduate as well as graduate-level courses in Engineering Colleges and Universities. A number of students take up the design and development of rocket engines or their key components during their final year projects or PG thesis. Most common forms of research use analytical or Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) design and analysis. Confidence in the resulting design is generally low due to lack of experimental facilities in universities and research institutes. This project takes up the challenge of designing and fabricating a rocket engine testbed capable of evaluating key performance parameters of rocket motors in the lab. The targeted performance parameters include thrust force, chamber pressure and exhaust gas temperature. The testbed will be designed to evaluate different rocket motor designs including solid, liquid as well as hybrid fuels. The testbed will also be able to evaluate the performance of fuel types, grain shape, combustion chamber pressures, thrust produced as well as the nozzle performance.
Project Objectives- Design and fabrication of rocket engine
- Design and fabrication of rocket engine testbed
- Literature review on types of rocket motors and their testbeds
- Selection of rocket motor type
- Design and fabrication of rocket motor
- Design and fabrication of rocket motor testbed
- Design and development of Data Acquisition (DAQ) system.
- Testing of rocket motor ar testbedĀ
