Project Title

Floating Moored Platform Position Control System with Thrusters to Minimize Drift and Deviation

Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject Summary

This project addresses the modeling and design of
a moored floating system with thrusters through which  deviation and drift of the floating platform can be controlled making the platform as much stable as possible. Such systems are applied to anchored floating production systems, wind turbines, and mobile offshore drilling units. The mooring system is designed to cater the mean environmental loads that are caused by numerous varying environmental conditions. In order to explore, survive, and produce in harsh climates innovative, reliable thinking and technology is needed. Thrust assisted position mooring is an innovative technique that is reliable and an energy-efficient station keeping method for structures that are stationed in deep water. In this design, the drift of the platform will be catered via mooring cables while the angular deviation will be accounted for via the DC motor operated thrusters. The controller will be commanding the Thrusters only. The mooring cables will be pre-installed and will have no part in our control system. The PD controller will be used to
control our system. The controller is chosen according to the
requirements of system. The system designed contains large
masses and disturbances. In order to minimize error and cater the disturbances, PD controller has been chosen, as it is one of the most advance and efficient controller that will stabilize the system along with improving the transient response and overshoot error. Mathematical models of floating platform mechanisms along with the thruster model has been devised. In the present age, the position mooring that is being used contains thrusters. The thruster is used for damping. They damp the platform, ship, or vessels potent dynamic motion. The thrusters also assist in accounting for the breakage of any line. So a more accurate and better damping control system will be created. The system will also aim to make certain improvements in the present system by increasing the balancing force and net force control. Nowadays every industry aims at improving the
efficiency of their work and operations irrespective of the field. In the ports, shipping, and harbor industry, the key point of their operations is to increase the productivity and efficiency of their operations. Many factors like weather conditions, wave currents, and many other factors contribute to lower productivity. So the main purpose of this design will be to improve the productivity and efficiency of the mooring system that is in practice now. This design will be aiming to achieve an efficient, less complicated and productive design for Thruster assisted position mooring System.

Project Objectives

Design and fabrication of Floating Moored Platform Position Control System with Thrusters to Minimize Drift and Deviation. To minimize the unstability of floating platform by using thrusters.

Project Implementation Method

Project implementations include Equipment includes items required for prototype/working model of FYP are  Integrated Chips (ICs), Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and its Fabrication, Thrusters, Floating Platform, Electronic Components like Resistors, Diodes, and Capacitors etc.,  Electric Motors, Switch Boards, PLC, Sensors, AV Cards, Foundry/fabrication Work, Smart Devices & Screens etc.  Misc items include  stationery, printing, overheads etc.

Benefits of the Project

this system mainly addresses the problem faced by marine sector. The benifit of this project is that large anchored floating offshore units in the sea have to be stabilized in order to manintain uniform operations. The current method mostly in practice is the use of mooring cables. This method has many drawbacks which include moorinhg line failures as well as cost of mooring lines. in order to improve the mooring system and improving the efficiency, the thruster system is being introduced to assist in mooring. The thruster system helps the floating platform to be stable  without using mooring cables.

It can be installed in windmills, oil rigs, ships.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

First of all the software of the system will  be designed by transfer funcion approach. MATLAB and SIMULUNK are to be used  to design the system. A control system controls the operation of the system. Sensors are installed to monitor the displacement and heading of the floating Unit.  A prototype will be designed first on which we will apply our method amd analyse the results. In order to design prototype and test it. same disturbances and conditions will have to be generated.
