Project Summary

Throwable unmanned ground vehicle is an impact resistant robot which can be thrown from a certain height. Used for surveys of usually unaccessable locations, pipeline and commercial machinery inspections, surveillance in urban environment, it can be deployed in situation which may compromise human life or efficieny in above mentioned scenarios.

To reduce the impact force, mainframe of the robot will be fabricated with carbon fiber which is light weight and easily portable. Since wheels should absorb most of the impact, a semi-flexible material will be chosen for this purpose. Complete calculations and analysis will be done to check the viability of the robot.

Project Objectives

Objectives of the project:

1. To design a throwable unmanned ground vehicle that will be able to survive a fall of 7 meters.

2. To design a light weight and low cost body with materials easily available in the market.

3. To integrate visual camera for visual transmission.

4. Weight of throwable UGV should be less than 2.5 Kg.

5. Explicit Dynamic Analysis will be done on the required design.

6. Throwable UGV will have runtime of atleast 30 minutes.

Project Implementation Method

Complete research will be done on the project. Then materials will shortlisted. Different CAD models will be designed to test these shortlisted materials on ansys in which drop test(explicit dynamic analysis) will be done on them. The most campatible materials will then be finalized. Motors will be selected on the basis of size, torque, and speed. Since the design will be two wheeled, small motors that complete the above mentioned conditions will be used. A tail will be used for stability of the bot. a camera that may have sufficient visual efficieny will be used for video transmission.

Benefits of the Project

Throwable Unmanned Ground Vehicle will be used for location surveys, inspection of pipelines for potential leaks and cracks, inspection of condition of large commercial machinery, reconnaissance and surveillance in urban environment. It will also be used in other scenarios where visual aid is required.

It will be used by military and security aggencies for search and rescue purposes, as well as by departments which need to survey a location where human deployments may cause detrimental effects.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The bot will be controlled by a microcontroller which will be programmed to perform the required operations to complete the tasks. The microcontroller will be integrated with motors and camera. The motor driver will be connected to a receiver which will allow wireless control. couplers will be used to align motor with shaft and to absorb the impact which may potentially harm the motors. Flanges will also be used to provide support to the shaft and prevent major vibrations from affecting the internal circuitry. The electronics and supporting components will be placed in a rigid, shock resistant body. The wheels will be made of a flexible material, which will absorb most of the impact incurred by the fall.
