Project Summary

In Elementary Schools, students are being taught variety of science subjects using different teaching methods, tools and technologies. However, the subject of chemistry is considered to be a core course, in which, the periodic table plays a key role in understanding basic concept of chemistry for students. The periodic table consists of variety of chemical elements according to their weight, type, valence and nomenclature in textual information. It is a trivial task for elementary students to understand, memorize and apply those chemical elements efficiently and effectively for experimentation in laboratory. It is increasing the mental workload for elementary students while memorizing, selecting, and applying chemical elements in different experiments. In this regard, it is aimed to propose design and develop a 3D application/system using android methods, tools and technologies. The proposed 3D application/system will help students in learning and developing a comprehensive understanding a Periodic Table and its associated element through appropriate content design and user interface design using Smartphone. It may lead in increasing student’s motivation towards learning concepts of chemistry and improve overall User Experience (UX) through mobile technologies.

Project Objectives

The key objectives of our project will be to enhance the learning of students.

  1. To design and develop 3D mobile based application for learning Chemistry.
  2. To enhance the teaching and learning Pedagogies for chemistry education.

Project Implementation Method

In order to obtain the project objectives, the study methods are divided into following two phases:

  1. Design and Development of 3D Application.
  2. Validation of the Developed 3D Application.

1.Design and Development

This phase will perform following set of activities:

  • To design 3D Models of Periodic Table using Blender.
  • Development of 3D Application for Learning Chemistry using “Unity 3D”.

2.Validation

  • The research methodology consists design and development of 3D models.
  • Rendering these 3D models into Unity Environment.
  • Study - 1: The data will be collected and statically analyzed by conducting research “Learning chemistry using traditional methods”.
  • Study – 2: The data will be collected and statically analyzed by conducting research i.e., “Learning Chemistry through 3D Application”.

Benefits of the Project

The outcome research project will facilitate students and teachers in learning chemistry through Mobile Phones using 3D interactive learning App in which Students can Visualize periodic table elements in 3D and get clear understanding of key features and functions of periodic table like physical properties, chemical properties, daily uses, basic details, electronic configuration and chemical bonding. It could be possible to extend the project of Learning Chemistry through Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) using 3D Modeling in Unity 3D. It may lead to research the Advance Teaching and Learning methodologies in the Education domain for sustainable learning.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

3D Learning Application

The deliverable of this project will be a “3D Learning Application” for learning chemistry periodic table for elementary level students. Blender will be used for making models of periodic table elements and texturing would be done in Photoshop. Assets will be combined in UNITY 3D for development of 3D Application.
