Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is being used for different structural strength tests, like testing of building block sample that how much force it can bear. Different parameters of material like yield strength, young modulus and ultimate strength is also calculated from the test data. In manual UTM machine Controlling of Constant loading rate and displacement rate is difficult to achieve as required by different testing standards like International Organization for Standardization (ISO) etc. And in Automatic UTM machine exact measurements of all these parameters and constant loading rate & constant displacement rate can be easily obtained by implementing an efficient intelligent control system with servo hydraulic valve. After converting manual UTM to automatic UTM machine the error and uncertainty in testing will be approaches to zero.

The standard requirements of testing of structural materials is impossible to achieve in Manual Universal Testing Machine. The conversion of Manual UTM to Automatic UTM is achieved by implementing an intelligent control system. A servo hydraulic controller will be implemented in between the piston of the UTM and pressure pump of UTM. Servo hydraulic valve is controlled by PID controller. PID controller will sent a reference data to the servo hydraulic valve and servo hydraulic valve will control the pressure of hydraulic oil used in hydraulic actuator. Hydraulic actuator will apply load on the test specimen and a feedback sensor will calculate the loading rate and displacement rate of the hydraulic actuator and will sent it to controller as a feedback.
After conversion of manual UTM to Automatic UTM the following parameters will be calculated accurately:
Young Modulus, Percent elongation, Yield strength, Ultimate strength.
Standard testing of materials used in building constructions will be performed by this machine with accurate results.
Servo hydraulic controller system with a microcontroller and feedback system will be delivered. Microcontroller will be connected with the servo hydraulic valve in a block. There will be two sensors installed on the block which will measure the required loading and displacement rate of the UTM.
