Project Summary

The history of aviation so far has been a race to develop and research technology to enhance aircrafts for better handling qualities and flight performance either by newly introduced methods or by optimizing and upgrading existing ones. Gyrocopters had been significantly popular back in early 1920s before research made helicopters practical and neglected for quite prolonged period. Nowadays their applications have been increasing drastically in both civil and military sectors. Due to the ability of free autorotation Gyrocopters can operate at slow speeds with excellent maneuverability without stalling which makes them unique for difficult operations hence gives them advantage over fixed wing and helicopters.

This project covers the work on design and development of a multipurpose unmanned gyrocopter.

The methodology followed is more likely a cycle of design, analysis, fabrication and testing resulting in to a development of an optimized working model. Detailed geometry is developed and optimized through CFD and FEM analysis to achieve designed model that is followed by fabrication and flight testing. This paper gives the detailed description of work and procedure conducted for various tasks related to design and development of a Gyrocopter.

Gyrocopters applications have been increasing drastically in aviation, military, and tourism sectors and commercially there are only few companies that are working on them currently. Our project could be a feasible product in its growing market.

The primary goal of this research was to develop a roadmap for the development of Gyrocopters. It can be employed by students and industry to develop their practical understanding of unmanned Gyrocopters

Gyrocopters/Autogyros/Gyroplanes all uses unpowered rotor in free autorotation to develop lift forward thrust is provided independently by engine driven propellers

Aim

To design and analyze a flightworthy radio-controlled Gyrocopter

In order to achieve this aim, we will undertake the following tasks:

1.Carried out literature review on Autogyros with the available resources in the public domain.

2.Numerically calculate parameters like wingspan, coefficient of lift, wing loading, and thrust to weight ratio for the UAV that is to be designed.

3.Fabrication of Prototype

4.Conceptual and Detailed Design of a full-scale model

5.CFD and FEM analysis of detailed designed geometries of full-scale model

6.Fabrication of Full-scale Model

7.Flight Testing

Project Implementation Method

This project will include implication of RC gyrocopter for that purpose at first stage prototypes are developed and second stage full scale model will be fabricated and tested in order to achive fly worthy model

Benefits of the Project

For the past years many efforts were done to work on Gyrocopters in pakistan but due to limited research and literature available this project could'nt be continued this projrct will help to develop a roadmap for possible suggestions for the development of gyrocopters and the research on the gyrocopters to develop Gyrocopters in Pakistan and promote local manufacturing and research on it in order to work on full scale model in future.
