Design and development of oscillating hydrokinetic turbine
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryPakistan is a developing country and energy is an important factor for its development. As we move towards modernization, our energy requirements keep on increasing. In order to fulfill energy requirements fossil fuels are commonly used but since they are available in limited amounts, renewable energy sector is the alternative. Pakistan is filled with abundant sources of renewable energy. Harnessing this energy requires different types of devices, be it wind turbines, solar panels or hydro turbines. Our Project focuses on one such hydro turbine which will be using wave energy to generate energy. Oscillating Hydrokinetic turbines harvest wave energy potential from ocenas and running streams.Oscillating Hydrokinetic turbines will be suitable for shallow waters. Optimal aerodynamic shape and configuration to improve the efficiency of our turbine will be researched.
Project ObjectivesOur objective will be to extract energy from water waves. We would like to work on improving the efficiency of the turbine by using optimal aerodynamic shapes and configurations. Our project will also include assessment of feasible sites for installation of the project. Prototypic development of the Oscillating Hydrokinetic turbine will also be done.
Project Implementation MethodThe project would be completed in steps. A prototype oscillating hydrokinetic turbine of 2-5 KW capacity will be design and fabricated and tested on run of river schemes. We will design our case and set it up. In the first phse of the project numerical investigatios will be performd to work out fundamental operating variable for optimal conditions. In the second phase the prototype model wil be debvelop and performance will be estimated in the field. Result will be published for development of array configurations of these turbine as per the Ocean wave data from National Institute of Oceanography
Benefits of the ProjectAn oscillating hydrokinetic turbine can extract energy from flow of water. This technology can be applied in places where there are low flow rates and shallow waters. In Pakistan there are many places that are not connected to grid and have no electricity. Using our turbine, we can provide them with electricity. Wave’s energy from oceans can also be harnessed using this turbine. Pakistan has 990kms of coast line which provides for an abundant potential of energy. Currently hydro power is a small percentage of energy supplies in Pakistan. At present there is no such technology available to harness energy from energy potential of Pakistan Oceans having thousands of MW feasible potential.
