Project Summary

In today’s world and especially in Pakistan, due to the dependence on alternate energy resources, there is a growing demand of Inverters. Our aim is a 9-level MLI (Multilevel Inverter). Inverter is a device which converts direct current into  alternating current. Solar cells, fuel cells, and even some types of generators provides direct current, so here the need of inverters comes. Inverters are being used worldwide on industrial and domestic level. Mostly electronic devices operate on alternating current. As the inverters available in the market use a lot of switches for the operation which ultimately results into higher prices for the products. In this regard, we believe that our approach will reduce the number of switches by applying computational and modulation techniques.

Nowadays, DC Power transmission is preferred over AC transmission due to less power losses, so again we need inverters in grid stations to convert DC into AC. Keeping in view the CASA-1000MW project, we believe a significant rise in demand of inverters in the coming future. Multi-level Inverters which are available in market operate on fixed firing angles for each level of voltage and these angles are not optimized. In our project, we are using Heuristic algorithms to find optimized angles. Due to the optimized angles the output wave of inverter looks very close to sine wave and the efficiency of inverter increases. Moreover we are implementing a new topology in which we reduce the number of switches.By less number of switches, power losses will be less, size of inverter will be compact and the overall efficiency of the product will be improved. In future, we are also interested to convert our inverter into loop back inverter.
