Project Title

Design And Development of Hand Exoskeleton Robot for physiotherapy

Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject Summary

Hand therapy is a major segment of physiotherapy needed in the rehabilitation of partially paralyzed patients due to injuries of the spinal cord. The challenging goal of improvement of quality of patients’ lives, is usually met through traditional or emerging techniques; the hand exoskeleton system is one of the physiotherapy applications in the latter case. Many hand exoskeletons are designed to recover hand movement with minimum degrees of freedom(DOF). With the reduction of DOF, the joints can be easily controlled.

This project aims at designing and developing a robotic hand exoskeleton for the use in physical therapy of affected hands and recovery of patients with neuromuscular disorders. The designing procedure is carried out in SolidWorks software followed by constructional work with lightweight materials mainly aluminum. Also, four servomotors are used for extension and flexion of four fingers of the hand via thread and spring mechanism, whereas thumb is fixed in a specific position.

Project Objectives
  1. To develop a solid model of a hand exoskeleton
  2. To fabricate hand exoskeleton mechanism with locally available components and materials
  3. To design and develop a control system for autonomous physiotherapy using hand exoskeleton
Project Implementation Method

After the successful design and development of the Mechanical Exoskeleton prototype, its performance will be assessed firstly by operating with the help of microprocessors and suitable software. The parametric study will be performed to assess the system performance by varying the load condition. Results thus obtained will be used to optimize the performance

Benefits of the Project

The hand exoskeleton system performs rehabilitation of an individual paralyzed hand. Such systems can be operated by the patients themselves and therefore no special person is required. The system is Light-weighted, compact, and cost-effective. The further developments in such systems can revolutionize the field of biomedical and physiotherapy.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The results of the project will be helpful in the development of hand exoskeleton for rehabilitation of patients who have partial or total loss of hand mobility. This project aims to specifically target those areas with poor healthcare facilities by developing a low-cost rehabilitation system. The product will be a computer-based model and a prototype. The prototype consists of mechanical construction as well as actuation.
