DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF BEVERAGE MAKING MACHINE SYSTEM
Beverage is defined as any potable liquid. Beverages such as tea, coffee, lemonade and fresh juices are common in countries like Pakistan. Most of the time such beverages are sold in cafes and by vendors on the streets. Usually in all the cases operation is carried out manually by the operator and billing process is handled by owner of that place. Offices where every minute is important, it can take 10-15 minutes for the beverage to reach the customer. This job can be done in less time and with less effort by automatic beverage machines.
Automation has already started taking manual operations that are being done in industries. An automatic beverages maker can be placed in houses as well as in offices, as it will reduce the effort done by user to get beverages. The system will be self-operable and user friendly. The business opportunities for such system are in huge demand in places such as schools, colleges, parks, cinema halls, offices and houses. The purpose to design such a machine is to provide a domestically available machine. The machine can be easily carried or moved, especially because of its light weight and compact size.
The machine will consist of several subsystems such as water supply, compartments for ingredients (in liquid form), user interface module, control circuit and feedback system. Hardware of the machine will be made using acrylic sheets, steel and wooden materials. The water supply system will be apart from main body of machine. A pump will suck water from a bottle. The machine will consist of 5 compartments for ingredients. The system will support several beverages depending upon ingredients added and code run by user. The flow through compartments will be controlled using peristaltic pumps. It is a liquid displacement pump. It consists of two parts i.e. a DC motor and pump body, the pump body is 3D printed. It is used in places where no contamination and precise control of liquid flow is preferable.
User interface consists of rotary encoder with LCD screen embedded on a module called RepRap LCD Module. A fine display will be shown on its LCD screen. User will have to choose his/her desired drink from available options. A 12V switching DC power supply is used. In order to control a DC motor used with peristaltic pumps through Arduino, a motor driving circuit is used. We used a MOSFET(IRF540) as motor driving circuit. By connecting an Arduino PWM output to the gate of MOSFET speed of the motor can be controlled. Low power Arduino PWM signal switches on and off the gate at the MOSFET through which the high-power motor is driven.
Filling of cup/glass will be monitored through sets of sensors which will act as a feedback unit and will alarm microcontroller in case of overflow. This machine will be expanded to an automatic beverage maker vending machine by adding a cash accepting unit. Which can be placed in public areas like parks, hospitals and malls.
This project adds more value in the field of control and automation. The objective of this project is to make such a machine that can reduce the human-effort in making a beverage that is to automate the beverage making process. This will reduce the effort done by a user to make beverages.
Nowadays when every minute is important, it can take 10-15 minutes for a beverage to reach a consumer. It is desired to make such a machine that can do this job in less time and with less effort. The machine will be easy to operate which will reduce both time and effort in making a beverage.
The objective of this project is also to make a machine which is compact in size making it suitable for moving from one place to another without much effort. It will support a number of beverages which can be increased through code in the microcontroller.
The beverage making machines available in Pakistan are imported from other countries. It is also aimed to start the production of such machines by making them in Pakistan and decreasing our country’s imports.
The main body of machine contains ingredient compartments, power supply, peristaltic pumps, microcontroller, dispensing unit and user interface. Initially there are 5 compartments for ingredients. Ingredients can be refilled easily through a back door. Number of compartments can be increased if required. 6 Peristaltic pumps are mounted on the upper back wall of machine. These pumps will transfer water and ingredients from water tank and ingredient compartments to dispensing unit. Dispensing unit is situated in center front of the machine, below this unit consumer will place his/her glass for the beverage. User interface consists of rotary encoder with LCD screen embedded on a module called RepRap LCD Module. It is situated at top front of machine. With the help of connecting wires, it is connected with a microcontroller placed inside at the right wall of the machine. The microcontroller will be controlling the flow of liquids from ingredient compartments and water tank to dispensing unit with the help of peristaltic pump. The motor of peristaltic pumps is driven by a DC power supply located inside body just behind LCD module. For the feedback mechanism of machine, two ultrasonic sensors are used. These sensors will alarm microcontroller in case of overflow of liquid from glass and further flow of liquid is stopped. Accurate level of beverage in the glass is detected through these sensors.
Water supply for machine is separate from the main body and a peristaltic pump is used to supply water. As water being main ingredient of any beverage, it will be the most consumed item. So, water will be needed in abundance and user will need to refill it more frequently than other ingredients. If water supply is separate from main body, it is easier for a user to refill it. Moreover, it provides consumer to have a large reservoir of water as compared to other ingredients.
This project will reduce human-effort in making a beverage by automating the beverage making process. This will reduce the effort done by a user to make beverages. The machine will reduce time in making beverages. It supports a number of beverages which can be increased and can also be replaced depending upon consumer’s requirement. Compact size will make it easy to move the machine from one place to another. The business opportunities for such machines are huge as they can be placed in schools, colleges, universities, cinema halls, public gardens and various other public places. By making such machines in Pakistan we can reduce Pakistan’s dependency on foreign countries to import beverage making machines.
The shape of our final deliverable is shown in figure 1 and 2. Figures show the external view of machine. Dispensing unit and RepRap LCD module are on the front side. Dispensing unit will dispense beverage in glass placed by user.
Internal view of machine is shown in figure 3 and 4. Space for power supply is left empty in figure. Figure 4 shows ingredient compartments, which can be replaced easily through the back window. Arrangement and number of ingredient compartments can be changed depending upon requirement of the consumer. Peristaltic pumps will move liquid from water tank and ingredient compartment to dispensing unit.
When a consumer interacts with the system. The user interface gives him/her 5 options of beverages. On selecting required beverage, microcontroller gives command to peristaltic pumps and controls the flow of liquids and required beverage is dispensed in a cup/glass outside the machine. Figure 5 shows working diagram of the machine.
