In this project we are looking forward to designing and developing a Battery Electric Bike. Basically, we will convert Bicycle Frame into an electric bikes. The electric bike will be capable of carrying one passenger of upto 120Kg. The Electric Bike will be throttle assisted. In order to drive the vehicle, we will use a throttle, which will help drive the vehicle. The electric bike will be Battery Powered, which will be a rechargeable battery. Electric Bikes are really emerging in Pakistan because they are an easy mode of transportation for short distances. Electric Motor will be the main engine of the bike, which will help drive the bike. There will also some auxiliary equipment attached to it like a speedometer, indicators , head and tail lights.

Project Objectives

As we all know, that Global Warming is now a Big talk. And combustion engines play a vital role in increasing global Warming, as they expel harmful gases and produce a lot of noise. So, in order to minimize pollution we will design and develop electric Bike which will not expel harmful gases and there is minimized noise pollution. The electric Bike will help with the Green environment as it will be eco- friendly.  

Project Implementation Method

We will install a Mid Drive motor at the lower center of the bike where there is a pedal system. With the help of a chain, the motor is connected to the Back Tyre. There will be a throttle which will vary the speed of the motor. The motor then drives the vehicle as it is battery powered, so the battery will be installed in the middle of the bike where there is empty space. The battery will supply energy to the motor driver. There will also a charging port installed at the back of the seat. We will also install indicators, head and tail lights.

Benefits of the Project

Our electric bike will have a low running cost, as we know that fuel prices are so high these days, so basically, it will be cheaper to run, and there will be a cleaner environment. Electric bikes will give us a better driving experience. It is better for our planet. The combustion engine produces a lot of harmful gases and  noise, so our electric vehicle will help minimize global warming as it does not produce any harmful gases or any noise. Sometimes there are free parking bays especially for electric vehicles in order to encourage electric vehicles, so, parking is also a big benefit. electric bikes have cleaner environmental effects as they have no congestion charge. The electric bike can also be charged by renewable energy sources like solar panels.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In this project we will use an arduino microcontroller which will generate a PWM pulse width modulation. PWM is basically a change in duty cycle. The throttle is basically a potentiometer which varies voltage from 0-5 volts, so the microcontroller will use an analog to digital value converter in order to vary the duty cycle of the PWM. The analog value which we get from the throttle will vary, so we will use a 10-bit converter in order to map our duty cycle, so when we change the value from throttle duty cycle of the pwm increase or decrease, dutycycle is basically on and off of the signal. PWM is beneficial for us because we do not want to lose any torque. So, this PWM is then supplied to Motor Driver. A motor driver is basically a H-Bridge driver who then drives the motor. The load of a motor is on a motor driver. A motor driver is capable of handling a lot of current which microcontrollers are not. A Brushless Dc motor is installed which will be installed at the lower middle of the frame where pedals are installed, so  when mounting the motor, we will remove the pedal system as there is no need for it. Then the motor is connected to the gear system of the rear wheel through a chain. The battery is mounted above the motor as there is empty space. The battery will be charged through a Wall mounted charger which will charger the battery of the electric Bike. The controller will also capable of Battery Manangement system. for example it will open the circuit there are over or under voltage and BMS will protect the battery from overcharging.We will also install a speedometer as our electric bike will be capable of reaching 25-35kmph. And we will also install indicators and head and tail lights.
