Design and development of an AI driven configurable knee joint prosthesis for amputees
We are making an actively configurable knee joint prosthetic for amputees, with an underlying intention of it being a low maintenance, user-friendly, and an affordable alternative for the unprevileged in Pakistan.
1. We start with the design and development of a four-bar knee joint.
2. Along with the implementation of a control system using an IMU sensor and a microcontroller that runs an AI algorithm based on the IMU sensor data.
3. And finally, the integration of both eletronic, and mechanical systems with the end objective of gait replication.
1. We design, develop, simulate, and fabricate a knee joint.
2. Moving forward, we set up an actuation method that, we design, develop, simulate, and fabricate as well.
3. We collect data, and train an AI algorithm on it, that can discern different modes of action.
4. And lastly, we design the kinematics for the prosthetic, and get it to replicate the gait of the user.
The project is based around the biomedical field, and it works well by integrating the field of engineering with it. The benefit of this project is not only that it helps a person otherwise amputated and unable to walk like a normal person, walk once more, but also we are researching the cheapest, most effective possible prosthetic that could be built so it becomes affordable and easily acquirable in 3rd world countries such as our own. And last but not the least benefit would be low maintenance, and reliable.
The final deliverable comprises of a working 4 bar linkage joint, an actuation method that supports it and turns it into an active prosthetic, an AI classification system to identify the mode of action to be taken, and a gait replicating controller that drives the prosthetic to follow the user. The actuator we are using is a 200W motor, which can withstand the load of a human body on it.
