Design a Metamaterial Based MIMO Antenna for Wearable Applications

Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject Summary

In recent years, wearable devices have received significant attention due to its widespread applications, such as sports monitoring, health care, and navigation. Antenna is a critical part for the performance of the wearable links. The design of wearable antennas is challenging. First, the wearable antennas are required to radiate efficiently and effectively in various environments, such as bending and body movement. To provide better user experience, the antennas need to be compact, low profile, and lightweight so that they are easy to be integrated in the clothes and other devices. Moreover, considering that the antenna is very close to the human body, good on body performance is in demand, and specific absorption rate (SAR) limitations should be fulfilled from health perspective.

On the other hand, to mitigate the adverse effects such as multipath fading and shadowing brought by the movement of body parts, MIMO technology was introduced into wearable antenna design. In this way, the channel capacity is also improved without increasing bandwidth. MIMO can add data carrying capacity without requiring additional bandwidth through Spatial Multiplexing. MIMO techniques enable improved signal range, reduced bit errors, lower power consumption, reduced interference and even enhanced non-line-of-sight(NLOS) connectivity.

Therefore, there is a need to design Metamaterial based MIMO Antenna for Wearable devices.

Project Objectives Project Implementation Method

In order to design Metamaterial Based MIMO Antenna for wearable Applications, computer simulation technology (CST) Microwave studio(2019) Software will be used. flexible Rogers 6002 (Lossy) Material (Relative permittivity = 2.94, tan? = 0.0012, thickness = 0.254 mm) will be used for Substrate. The final designs will be fabricated and results will be experimentally validated.

Benefits of the Project

Wearable Antenna can track our daily activities like track the user’s location through a global positioning system (GPS), track vital signals such as Heart rate, speed, and time.

It can also be used in the following applications
