Project Summary

Air pollution is both an environmental and a social problem, as it leads to a multitude of adverse effects on human health, ecosystems and the climate. Air pollution is one of the largest environmental health risks in Pakistan today. Taking appropriate decisions in a timely period depends on the measurement and analysis of the parameters of the air, which creates the need for the development of real time air quality monitoring (AQM). It will help government to monitor air and take actions accordingly, also companies can use it to measure emissions of their factories. There is no locally made AQM system, government have imported two to three systems which are bulky in size and costly. We are proposing a cost efficient IOT based outdoor AQM system. It will consist of layer of sensors that measure major air pollutants like PM (2.5), NO2, SO2, O3 and CO. Sensors will be configured with nodemcu, after converting data into ppm form, this data will be upload to the cloud. And using web development this data will be shown on web portal, a mobile app will also be developed that will show AQI and will predict and notify users if AQI exceeds safety limits.

Project Objectives

Air Pollution has become a national issue in Pakistan. Most importantly, our system will be useful for environmental related government authorities like Pak EPA (Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency), SUPARCO and National Disaster Management Authority etc. for real time monitoring of air. This will identify the sources of pollution and help the government to take actions accordingly. Secondly, there are thousands of industries running in Pakistan. Cras Air will help these industries to monitor their emissions in order to comply with the government’s set levels. Other companies can also use it for their CSR related activities. CrasAir is also useful for identifying the area where there is more need for trees, so PHA can also take benefit from our AQM system. As our mobile app will provide real time AQI and after getting data for a couple of months our app will also be able to predict AQI, so we are also targeting smartphone users which are 68% of the total population in Pakistan. Our app will help its users to plan their activities according to predicted AQI provided by our app

Project Implementation Method

CrasAir is an iot based device. Firstly, Sensors will be configured with nodemcu by programming through Arduino using C language and after getting pollutants data in digital form, values will be uploaded to cloud a using mqtt protocol and esp8266 module. Solar panel will be used to power up the circuit. This data from the server will be excess through web and app development, after analyzing AQI will be shown on portal and app. Then using machine learning algorithms, we can draw conclusions and predict future AQI

Benefits of the Project

As air pollution is increasing day by day ,there is a need of more economical devices because we cannot generalize the air quality of the whole city by collecting data from one or two stationary nodes. We are offering cost efficient systems that provide real time data which will be helpful for environmental related authorities because when they have data then they will be capable of taking measures and devise there policy to reduce air pollution. Our CrasAir can also be used for measuring emissions of different industries and factories and this will be helpful for reducing emissions that can cause air pollution, government can impose fines on these industries and ask them to take measures accordingly. Common people will be our beneficiary ,they can see the status of air quality anytime on their mobiles and plan their activities accordingly. In short , our system will provide great help in improving the environment, so it has potential to attract government on large scale while industries and different companies can use this for CSR activities, and in the end our app idea will be helpful for generating profits through Ads and subscriptions also

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

CrasAir- An Unban Air Quality System will be an IOT device consists of network of different sensors to measure air pollutants like PM (2.5), NO2, SO2, O3 and CO.The whole system can be explained by dividing into three stages.First stage is Perception layer which mainly includes Field Sensor Network which is based on front-end acquisition device. This sensor network hardware platform includes low power embedded microcontroller with onboard sensors.. We will use dht11 for measuring temperature and humidity and groove sensors for measuring  PM2.5 ,NO2 , CH4, and carbon oxides. For sensing ozone and SO2 alpha sensors will be used which gives analogue value in voltages. To power up this node we will be using solar energy so that our device can easily operate in remote areas where providing electricity is difficult . Second stage is network layer in which we transmit data (ppm values of air pollutants) to cloud. The primary function of network layer is to transmit sensed data by connecting all the air sensors deployed in monitoring area to a central server and transmitting the data perceived by sensors to data center in real time. Transmission system is built according to service oriented requirement.Nodemcu will be used to integrate these sensors and get values in ppm(parts per million)We will use the built in wifi module of nodemcu (esp8266) and connect it with wifi dongle to send data to the cloud. GCP free (Google cloud platform) will be used to collect data from the node.MQTT communication protocol will be used for communication between node and cloud.MQTT is a publish-subscribe-based messaging protocol used in the internet of Things.which is bandwidth-efficient and uses little battery power.Third stage is  application layer which includes mainly to process and analyze air pollutant data, evaluate air quality and then predict the trend air quality develops over a period of time in the future.We will get real time data from google cloud and will be shown to the portal after analyzing. We can use machine learning algorithms to analyze data and resulted figures will be shown to the Mobile App. Notification will be sent to authorities and users off app if Air quality exceeds the safety limits. Furthur app will help in reducing air pollution by giving tips like if there is more CO2 app will notify to plant trees

 From a functional point of view, the whole application layer includes air quality evaluation and air pollution forecast
