The manual process of crack detection in concrete buildings is a time-consuming as well as a hectic task for the inspectors as it is difficult for them to reach high-rise buildings and detect cracks severity. Moreover, negligence in this regard could lead to the degradation of building structures resulting in loss of lives and property. The project is intended for the assistance of the building inspectors and the domain of the project will be disaster management. The project is a crack detection system for concrete buildings. The drone camera will be programmed to obtain the required images from a certain distance on its own. Furthermore, these images will be passed on to the Desktop Application with Crack Detection algorithms with its pre-processing algorithms which will classify the images as cracked and non-cracked. The system will show the model of the building specifying the locations with the cracks marked according to their severity.

Project Objectives

This project will meet the following objectives:

• To program the drone such that it will be able to record the video/images from a specified distance parameter

• To develop an efficient system i.e. Desktop App which pre-processes the images and detects the cracks

• To model the cracks along with their locations and severity through Desktop App.

• To ease the painstaking and time-consuming task of crack detection for inspectors.

The drone is an assistance of the inspectors to inspect and confirm the cracks in high-rise buildings efficiently. This project will create safety and durability of the structure as cracks depict the need for repair priorities.

Project Implementation Method

1. Acquiring Dataset: The dataset will be obtained by using the programmable drone camera from different distances to train the system in accordance with those captured images.

2. Making crack detection model: After acquiring the dataset, the model will be build using different algorithms for Pre-processing of images (Inversion, Scaling, Rotations, and Translations) then Image Processing for crack detection. The algorithm used will be Laplacian of Gaussian.

3. Training the model on the dataset: Once the algorithms will be tested and developed on images, the model will be trained using the dataset acquired above.

4. Building the Desktop App: Once the model is developed and trained, the Desktop app will be developed for showing the model of the building and identifying the cracks with their severity and locations. Furthermore, the parameters will be defined.

Benefits: It eases the hectic task for the inspectors to detect cracks in high-rise buildings. The automation of the manual crack detection process makes it less time-consuming.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The system detects cracks and makes a report where an inspector finds the building crack according to its severity.
