CONVERSION OF Conventional ENGINE Motorbike INTO ELECTRIC Motorbike
The automobile industry in the world is shifting from CO2 emission-based fuel to more efficient and environment friendly technologies. Although no any initiatives or study have been undertaken to reduce airborne emissions in Pakistan. If we continue to use fossil fuel-based transportation, that day is not far away when we will be facing shortage of fossil fuels and undesirable climate change. So, it is absolute necessary to give undivided attention to environment friendly and efficient technology mainly electric motorcycle.
The demand of motorcycle is growing day by day. Motorcycles are one of the dominant transportation modes in Pakistan. Pakistan is the 5th largest motorcycle market in the world after China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam with 7,500 new motorcycles being sold every day. Pakistan is also among the world’s fastest growing two-wheeler markets. This continuous increase in number of motorcycles are producing tremendous pollution in Pakistan, mostly in populated cities such as Lahore and Karachi.
Due to initial phases of the technological development, the initial cost of electric motorcycles are much higher than the current available engine motorcycles. In Pakistan many assembling companies like Jolta (Pak wheels 2019), Jaguar (Technology, 2019) have introduced their models pricing JE 50 (for 90 thousand), JE 70 (for 1 lakh). These prices will go down when the production and availability increases. This process will take some time.
So, to combine both issues, environmental and economic affordability, we have purposed a best solution of all which is to convert an existing engine motorcycle into an electric motorcycle which is economical, environment friendly and rational decision as well. Since we have 20 million 2-3-wheeler vehicles (motorcycles + Rickshaws) in the country according to Pakistan Bureau statistics.
We are going to buy a bike frame without engine, fuel combustion unit, and silencer. After this, to convert engine motor bike into electric one, at the broad level two things come into the picture one is motor with speed controller and battery with battery management system (BMS). We have gone through different literature reviews to study different motors and batteries used for electric motorcycles. BLDC motors and li-ion batteries seem the only best option for electric motorcycles. There are two available options to choose bldc motors. One is hub motor and second is brushless dc chain driven motor. After thorough research we have concluded to use hub motor over chain driven motor due to number of factors. Hub motors are more cheap and no maintenance is required than chain driven motors as they are less effective and required some maintenance and include some losses as well. We have chosen bldc hub motor of 48V and 1000W power output which matches for our model requirement. The second thing is battery with BMS which will power up the motor. We have chosen 48V and 20ah lithium-ion battery for our project. The charging time of the battery for full charge would be 3.5 to 5 hours. The full charge battery can cover up to 48 miles (78 km). The speed of our model will be 60 to 70 km/hour which is pretty good speed.
In conclusion, the project of converting existing engine bike into electric bike is the best idea which will not only save money but also we do not need to import or manufacture motorcycles in bulk amount in the country.
Since we have 20 million 2-3-wheeler vehicles (motorcycles + Rickshaws) in the country according to Pakistan Bureau statistics. All people can’t buy electric motorcycles because they are very expensive right now. So, our ultimate goal is to provide the service that if someone already has an engine motor bike and wants to have an electric one then he does not need to buy new one instead we will convert his/her existing one into electric one.
There is little technicality in our project than hardware design. We will be ensuring compatibility of the components. BLDC hub motor must be properly connected with the battery through controller and controller with the battery. we will also be using seperate motor for charging the battery during running.
