The presence of diseases in the apple fruit is one of the major factor of production and the economic degradation of the agricultural industry in Pakistan.

Agriculture sector is evolving with the advent of information and technology. Efforts are being made to enhance the productivity and reduce losses by using the state of the art technology. Many expert systems have been developed to facilitate the farmers in the world for specific regions. In Pakistan, majority of the farmers are unaware of the technology and latest practices.

We are going to propose an expert system that will be modelled specially for Pakistani region and will be easily understandable and usable for illiterate farmers as well. Our proposed system is based on Internet of Things (IoT), that will use the input data collected in real time. It will help to take proactive and preventive actions to minimize the losses due to diseases and insects/pests.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of our proposed system (Computer Aided Diagnostic system for plant based on IoT) are:

1. It will increase the yield of apple in Pakistan. More than half of the population of Pakistan lives in rural areas and major [62%] source of earnings of this population has based on agriculture. Most of the industries in Pakistan are also dependent on agriculture like textile industry, sugar industry, flour industry, juice industry, furniture industry, dairy industry, etc

2. Farmers in Pakistan are not aware of the technology and lack agricultural knowledge. They rely on traditional methods and techniques. The proposed system will provide more understandable and usable interface to the farmers.

3. The proposed system will provide an efficient and more accurate solution for apple plant disease detection and will recommend safety measures.

4. It will solve the problem of manual mechanism for disease detection accurately, without any human involvement for diagnostic purpose.

5. The proposed system will work fast saving a lot of time of farmers.

Project Implementation Method

Our CAD system for overcoming the problems of agriculture, we develop an initial framework based on IoT. The proposed solution consists of four main components the first component is the deployment of sensors; we deploy moisture sensors, humidity sensors, and temperature sensor. Sensors collect the data and send it to cloud. On the cloud side, the expert system will be deployed, which will process the data and send the recommendations to the farmers about crops.

A. Deployment of Sensors

The sensors will be deployed in the system for the collection of data about the plant, temperature, shade, humidity, moisture. Every sensor board consists of four different types of sensors, the moisture sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor and shade sensor. Project will be implemented using Internet of Things and image recognition/processing. Implementation method includes using several sensors for sensing temperature, shade and humidity.

B. Transfer of information

 The information gained by the sensors will be communicated to the cloud with the help of wifi shield associated with Arduino UNO board.

C. Analysis/Comparison

The cloud receives data through the internet. This data will be compared with given dataset to find either plant is healthy or diseased

D. Recommendation to Farmer

Finally, after detecting the disease a message will be sent to farmers for saving plants to further destruction.

Benefits of the Project

This project will provide several advantages including cost effective disease detection, accurate and fast results. If a human is allocated for this reason the main problem will be consuming a lot of time at training and can check less plant in particular time period. Our project will replace this manual system with an expert and efficient machine. Machine will provide accuracy in less time as more plants can be diagnosed by machine as compared to human. As a result more plant will be diagnosed which results in more yields of fruits. This project will provide benefit to a lot of farmers. Furthermore:

  1. It will increase the productivity and GDP growth rate in Pakistan. Pakistan is an agricultural country, and a major part of GDP is contributed by the agriculture sector. The foreign exchange of Pakistan depends heavily on agricultural products. More than half of the population of Pakistan lives in rural areas and major [62%] source of earnings of this population has based on agriculture. Most of the industries in Pakistan are also dependent on agriculture like textile industry, sugar industry, flour industry, juice industry, furniture industry, dairy industry, etc
  2. It will have consequences on other plant as well because time consumption will allow farmers to pay attention on other plants and the yield of other fruits will  increase

Low rate of failure: as a human the rate of failure is high as compared to machine.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The proposed system will require camera, Arduino, and sensors (i-e temperature sensor, shade sensor, humidity and moisture sensor). These sensors will sense certain data including temperature, shade, humidity and moisture. In parallel the system will take images of plant leafs at different angles. The information gathered will be sent to cloud using wifi shield associated with Arduino board. Then this data will be tested at the recommender part of the system. Finally it will generate the results either plant is diseased or healthy and will recommend some solutions to farmer.
