Clean Pakistan
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryWaste management is one of the primary problems that the world faces irrespective of the case of a developed or developing country. The key issue in waste management is that the garbage bin at public places gets overflowed well in advance before the commencement of the next cleaning process. It, in turn, leads to various hazards such as bad odor & ugliness to that place which may be the root cause for the spread of various diseases. To avoid all such hazardous scenario and maintain public cleanliness and health our work is mounted on a smart garbage system.
The main idea of the proposed work is to develop a smart intelligent garbage alert system for proper garbage management. A smart alert system is designed for garbage clearance by giving an alert signal to the municipal web server for instant cleaning of a dustbin with proper verification based on the level of garbage filling. This process is aided by the ultrasonic sensor which is interfaced with Arduino UNO to check the level of garbage filled in the garbage bin and sends the alert to the municipal web server and SMS on the cell phone once if garbage is 90% filled via IoT. Once the alert is received, Municipal Corporation takes initiative to clean the same. After cleaning the garbage bin, the municipal web server gets updated about the garbage bin been cleaned. This system provides information regarding the status of how waste collection is being done and followed up by the municipality authority.
Project ObjectivesThe Internet of Things (IoT) shall be able to incorporate transparently and seamlessly a large number of different systems while providing data for millions of people to use and capitalize. Building a general architecture for the IoT is hence a very complex task, mainly because of the extremely large variety of devices, link layer technologies, and services that may be involved in such a system.
One of the main concerns with our environment has been solid waste management which impacts the health and environment of our society. The detection, monitoring, and management of wastes are one of the primary problems of the present era. The traditional way of manually monitoring the wastes in waste bins is a cumbersome process and utilizes more human effort, time and cost which can easily be avoided with our present technologies.
This is our solution, a method in which waste management is automated. This is our IoT Garbage Monitoring system, an innovative way that will help to keep the cities clean and healthy.
And our system will also impact to help clean your community, home or even surroundings, taking us a step closer to a better way of living : )
Project Implementation MethodThe project will be divided into two modules, one is the detection of garbage level and then the second module is to send the information to the corresponding officials through GSM.
Garbage level detection is done by ultrasonic sensors (HC-SR04). The ultrasonic sensors are placed on top of the dustbin facing the bottom. The sensors continuously emit the sonic waves, when the sonic waves hit the object and reflect back, the echo in the sensors senses the waves and calculates the distance of the object. Arduino UNO is used for controlling whole the process detecting garbage in different places and depending on the program first display in Web App to reminding the garbage level in the bin even though the garbage is not taken out from the bin then the particular bin information is sent to through SMS to the officials through GSM.
Benefits of the Project- It will stop overflowing of waste bins along roadsides and localities as smart-bins are managed at real-time.
- The filling and cleaning time of the smart bin will also be reduced thus making empty and clean dustbins available to common people.
- By using the routing algorithm it will smartly find the shortest route thus it will reduce the number of vehicles used for garbage collection.
- It will reduce fuel Consumption.
- Improved customer service by lifting bins that need a collection
- Deployment of dustbin based on the actual needs.
- Cost Reduction and resource optimization.
- Improves Environment quality
-Fewer smells
-Cleaner cities
- Intelligent management of the services in the city.
- Effective usage of dustbins.
Phase 1
The proposed work aims at implementing dustbins enabled in 4 zones i.e. north zone, south zone east zone and west zone. We will do connections of all the components Aurdino Device, Ultrasonic Sensor, GSM Module, Wifi Module. The garbage bins are fitted with ultrasonic sensors that will sense the garbage level in the bin and sends it to the Aurdino Device. Arduino uses the information received from sensors and checks whether it is above or below the threshold level and if it is above the threshold then the SMS is sent to authorities no. of municipal staff using GSM Module and to the Web server to update the status of bin on the Map.
Phase 2
The Web App is created that will contain the detail of each individual dustbins and their unique ID’s. GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the Web App is created in order to provide a friendly environment, for Smart Garbage Monitoring. The Centralized System will display the different parameters that are Dustbin ID, location of dustbin and status of the bin.
Phase 3
The data acquired by the Web App will be used to systematically plan the route map to collect garbage using the Map. The information from the Trash bin is collected via Wifi Module to Web Server that helps in creating the optimized route and to update the status of the Bin.
For the optimal collection of waste from dustbins all around us, we are using the following Scheduling Mechanisms.
- Priority Scheduling
In this scheduling Mechanism, the dustbins are cleaned up according to their filled level. For example, if we have 4 dustbins and their fill up status is 30%, 80%, 90%, and 30 %. The collection of garbage also must happen according to the level of trash. This can be used for the routine check of bins for saving resources.
