Cheaper Home Automation Using Smartphone

Project Area of Specialization

Internet of Things

Project Summary

Nowadays home require sophistication control in their different gadgets which are basically electronic appliances.  Home automation impresses the initiated numerous year back as rapid growth in the field of information technology.  A Bluetooth ability has been striking technology to home automation or smart zone. Every person can control their home appliances by using their Android smartphones.

That's why in this project, we design, test, and propose the implementation of a cheaper online switching system in order to control the home appliance remotely via an internet connection.

Usually, this project is useful for disabled people who cannot perform their household tasks. They can control the appliances using voice commands.  Using a home automation system we can control and save energy consumption, this will also reduce energy consumption and improve economic growth.

Our project proposes a flexible, portable, and low-cost home automation system that will manage to control the light, fan, fridge, security, lighting system, music arrangement, floor detector, locks for doors, etc.

Project Objectives

We divide our project into the following objectives

  • Develop a home automation system that can be controlled remotely
  • Use the device that is cheaper and can be easily installed
  • Use low-cost materials and devices that are locally available
  • Make the system suitable for inexperienced and disable users. That can work easily without someone help
  • Make the system scaleable for further APIs and add-ons.
  • Make a network connectivity and app software interface to manage and control the device when are away from home
  • Standardize the system
  • Commercialize the system

Project Implementation Method

All the home appliances will be connected to the microcontroller that is Arduino or jetson nano.  The controller will have control to switch off or on the devices.  Further implementation details as follows

  • Arduino Uno R3 Development Board will be connected to the relay (R1-R6)
  • The relay will be further connected to different appliances.
  • The Android app will be connected to the Arduino or Jetson nano via Bluetooth.
  • We send commands to the microcontroller from the app to control the home appliances.

Benefits of the Project

There are numerous benefits of the proposed final year project. Here we mention a few of them mentioned as under.

  • Enables control remotely from anywhere, it is more comfortable and more controlled
  • Instant alerts increase security and avoid intrusions
  • Backup emergency control
  • Saves energy by automating the control of the appliances.
  • Comfortable and easy for people with no mobility
  • The system can be combined with local control to give higher flexibility
  • Cheaper and available technology to everyone

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our proposed cheaper home automation system is based on the micro process jetson nano and the android app.  Here is some connective and software details provided below.

Connections

  1. Connect pins 2-7 of Arduino to Relays R1-R6 at pin “x” of each relay respectively.
  2. Interconnect all the “y” pins of each relay and connect one of them to the GND pin of Arduino.
  3. Connect VCC of Bluetooth module to 5v power pin of Arduino and likewise GND pin of Bluetooth module to GND pin of Arduino.
  4. Interconnect all the “t1” pins of each relay and connect one of them to the 220V input of the main power supply.
  5. Connect anyone terminal of each of the devices to be controlled to pin “t2” of each of the relays R1-R6 respectively.
  6. Connect the other remaining terminals (Ground terminals) of all the devices to be controlled to the GND of the main power supply.
  7. Connect Tx of Bluetooth module to Rx of Arduino and Rx of Bluetooth module to Tx of Arduino.

Software used

  1. The code for Jetson nano
  2. The Android app is available
