Project Summary

Zamzam water, a noble water among the entire Muslim community around the globe. This water considered as “miracle water” and many therapeutic effects of this water have been reported. Although the study of microbial analysis and bacterial characterization of Zamzam is still very novel, not many publications are available explaining the microbial statistics of this water. This water is reported as bacteria free in one of the publication, contrary to this fact that normal drinking water or any other well water has diverse microbial genera in them. By this research it Is quite evident now that Zamzam also have a diverse bacterial genera in them. 10 isolates from the Zamzam sample is studied and analyzed in this research. Most of the researches and publication indicated that Gram –ve bacteria mostly constitute the micro biome of drinking water but Zamzam have both, Gram +ve and Gram -ve in equal concentration. Beside this some colored bacterial colonies are also observed which needs to analyzed further. Biochemically the bacteria present in Zamzam are good glucose fermenter while some of them also ferment the other sugars. Zamzam micro biome is also diverse like the other water but can be potentially different.

Project Objectives

Our current study focuses on the microbial characteristics of zamzam water in order to evaluate the biological reasons behind these unique characteristics of water. As it is groundwater it is also necessary to compare it with normal potable water and determine the differences in biological growth between the two. The main objectives of this research is qualitative analysis and characterization of microbial genera present in Aab e Zamzam water.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The Zamzam water is considered as the “Holy water” among the Muslims all over the word. The water is considered blessed as it is believed to satisfy thirst and cure illness .The water is obtained from well and is treated by a series of filtration process and ultraviolent disinfection before distribution to consumers (B Shomar, 2012). The water can be obtained from coolers present throughout Masjid Al Haram (Makkah) and Masjid Al Nabawi (Madina). At the time of hajj, there are approximately four million pilgrims each year. Pilgrims often fill water canisters and bottles from taps to take back home for use and as gifts for friends and relatives. Realizing the increasing demand of zamzam water, the Saudi Geological Survey has formed a Zamzam Studies and Research Centre (ZSRC), whose resposible for ensuring the sustainability of zamzam water sources by feeding the Zamzam well with quantitative and qualitative measures which includes filtering, sterilizing and storing the blessed Zamzam water in both Makkah and Madinah.

Zamzam Water has always sustained its composition and taste ever since it is found. Usually taste of water varies at different places. But Zamzam water's charisma has always been same throughout years. Biological growth (e.g bacteria,alga) and vegetation usually takes place in most wells. This makes the water inedible due to the development of algae causing taste and odor problems. But in this case of Zamzam water, there was no any sign of biological growth that could have harmful effect on human health. The well water is pure by itself but the leakage of underground water and external usage of people can cause pollution. For this purpose ultraviolet ray is being used as a safe mean for sterilization.
