Project Summary

•In this project, we use CFD tool to determine the aerodynamic drag coefficient of a circular cylinder immersed in a uniform fluid stream.

•The cylinder axis is oriented perpendicular to the stream.

•The computations are performed for Reynolds number = 10 and 1,000 where Re = rUD/m = UD/n, D is the cylinder diameter, U is the velocity of the fluid stream, and r, m and n are the fluid density, dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity, respectively.

•The Goal of the simulation is to obtain the drag coefficient for a circular cylinder of D = L = 0.1m, placed in air stream at 20 °C using CFD tool and compare it with experimental/Analytical data.

Project Objectives

•Be familiar with the basis of Computational theory for two-dimensional flow analysis.

•Understand the fundamentals of external flow over circular cylinder through the use of the Open source CFD software.

•Be able to construct a correct solid model using the SolidWorks CAD and perform an accurate CFD analysis.

•Know how to interpret and evaluate CFD solution quality including verifying analytically the drag coefficient of a cylinder immersed in a uniform fluid stream.

•Learn to apply the appropriate ambient and boundary conditions and decide on the suitable size for the computational domain.

Project Implementation Method

Design, conduct, and implement a series of tests to determine the pressure distribution and drag coefficient on the circular cylinder at a fixed Reynolds number, and compare with inviscid theory.. Design, conduct, and implement a series of tests to determine the shape and form of the circular cylinder wake at a fixed Reynolds number.. Find out the effect of Reynolds number on drag and/or pressure distribution and/or wake shape and compare with data.Find out if this cylinder model undergoes a drag crisis, and the Reynolds number or range of Reynolds numbers over which that occurs. Note that you won't be able to reach a Reynolds number of 400,000 with the open jet wind tunnel, but this should not be necessary with the free stream turbulence present in this facility.

.through of this simulation type project we will easily calculate the drag coefficient and preesure distribution around a circular cylinder.we khow that there is alot use of circular shape body immersed in fluid.
