Camless Engine to Reduced Power Wastage For Improving Engine Performance
The project deals with The engines powering today’s vehicles whether they burn gasoline or diesel fuel rely on a system of valves to admit fuel and air into the cylinder and the exhaust gases to escape after combustion. Cam has been an integral part of internal combustion engine from its invention. Cam controls the breathing channels of the IC engines and hence maintains constant valve timing. The problem in using cam shafts is being major power wastage in accelerating and decelerating the components of the valve train. Friction of camshafts, springs, cam belts etc., also robs us of precious power and worsens fuel economy not to mention contributing to wear and tear. In response to the needs of improved engines some mechanical or hydraulic devices have been designed to achieve some variable valve timing and to reduce the disadvantages accompanied with the usage of cams. Most four-stroke piston engines today employ one or more camshafts operated poppet valves. The lobes on the camshafts operate cam followers which in turn open the poppet valves. A cam less (or, free valve engine) uses electromagnetic, hydraulic, or pneumatic actuators to open the poppet valves instead. Actuators can be used to both open and close the valves, or an actuator opens the valve while a spring closes it.
The main objectives of project is to reduce engine weight and increasing the efficiency of engine by using electrical actuator/ soleniods along with valves springs as well as consumption of fuel than cam-engine.
Valeo estimates that the efficiency of a camless engine would be 20% greater than a comparable camshaft-operated engine

In this project the main point of our is to increase the engine performance, efficiency and accuracy. it can be increased by reducing the engine weight by removing the camshaft and cambelt and cam follower. after removing the parts of engine we add the actuator or soleniod and springs. for the exhaust and intake function.
1) Offers continuously variable & independent control of allaspects of valve motion - lift, operation duration, event of opening.
2) ECV system can control valve velocity, valve acceleration and deceleration.
3) Better fuel economy- 7 to 10 % increase.
4) Higher torque & power- 10 to 15 % increase.
5) Lower exhaust emissions- EGR system is eliminated since EGR effect occurs on its own & thus reduces NOx emissions
6) Reduction in size & weight
Start with a four stroke overhead valve engine from a snowblower, scooter, or the like. Make sure the engine is a non-interference model. This means that it is physically impossible for the valves to crash into the pistons. Add a power source and some solenoids. From there it’s just a matter of creating a control system. The control system is a mechanical wheel with electric contacts, similar to a distributor cap and rotor system.uses a microcontroller to operate the solenoids. This project uses two solenoids. one to open and one to close the valve. The engine doesn’t need to rely on a spring for closure. We uses hall effect sensors on the original camshaft to fire the solenoids. This route is an excellent stepping stone before making the jump to full electronic control.
