Blindness, an inability to see anything including light. According to a report issued by World Health Organization in 2010, about 39 million people across the world are blind. Blindness sometimes found in an individual by birth and sometimes events such as road accidents, causes the loss of vision in an individual. There are two major types of blindness that can be found in an individual of any age i.e. Legal blindness and Complete Blindness.

The purpose of this system is to provide fully blind audience, an assistance towards daily life tasks, the problem they face going. It highlights all the pros and cons of the existing system and explains why there is a need to propose a new system for this domain. Furthermore, the reasons behind why such existing products are still have limited access of users are also discussed.

The proposed system targets users who are completely blind. Some major organizations have already provided excellent services in this domain. But with their excellent services, there were still some drawbacks because of which these companies never became popular and helpful in the society of blind people. The major reason was price as they were really expensive to be in approach of a common person of this society. Some of them uses their call centers to navigate blind people and some made their users to buy subscriptions too along with the product. 

The proposed system with the help of self-made smart glasses enables the daily chores of blind people less difficult. It helps them to detect hurdles such as barriers, stairs etc. by using image processing technique of artificial intelligence, provides a full navigation to their most visited destinations with the help of google maps API, enables them to verify the currency note by using the same image processing technique of artificial intelligence. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm in artificial intelligence will be used. The major aspect of this proposed system is that it is less costly and is reachable by every common people of this society. 

The application end will be android based and allow the guardians to take care of the user by providing them live location, enables them to save and check the already saved routes to the most visited destinations.

Project Objectives

  “To design a low-cost blind navigation system for fully blind people to navigate them through different paths and hurdles by using self-made smart glasses”.

Project Implementation Method

The proposed system will be developed by using iterative waterfall model. 

The reason behind using this model is its flexibility to provide feedback 

from each phase to its previous one.

Above is the figure of iterative waterfall model which shows the back step of feedback towards its previous phase. Iterative waterfall allows to go back on the previous phase and change the requirements and some modification can be done if necessary. This model reduces the developer’s effort and time required to detect and correct the errors. In iterative waterfall model, next phase can only begin when the previous phase is completed as waterfall model. 

Benefits of the Project

The proposed system is a blind navigation system which specifically targets the fully blind audience. The basic motive is, to provide navigation through paths. The application end allows to add new destinations and get directions towards it. It allows currency scanning, warns user against any hurdle that occurs in the path.
