Project Summary

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) have some crucial application such as target detection, search and rescue and recent developments in UAV’s have allowed the use of networked UAVs which are deployed in an unknown region to search and destroy targets.
To successfully destroy a target, a coalition of UAVs with sufficient cumulative resources needs to be assigned. Depending on the target resource requirement, it may be necessary to deploy a coalition of UAVs to perform the action.
This project focuses on the translation of MATLAB algorithm for the autonomous coalition formation between Unmanned Aerial Vehicles into a microcontroller language using the advance code generation techniques available in MATLAB. Since no code generation technique provides the finalized code, several changes shall be made to make the code compatible with the microcontroller.
A communication network will also be developed between UAVs. After successful code translation the microcontroller will be interfaced with the communication modules, after which the finalized system will be embedded in the UAV kits

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is to make the autonomous coalition possible between UAVs during a search and destroy operation and also to enable UAVs to:
1. Neutralize the target in minimum time
2. Keep the coalition size minimum during a search and destroy operation

Project Implementation Method

Firstly, MATLAB code generation techniques needs to be evaluated and then the most efficient one would be selected for the translation of MATLAB code in to a microcontroller language.
Then microcontroller will then be finalized for later integration with other hardware modules. On the other hand, translated code shall be tested for errors and it should be made compatible with the selected microcontroller.
Selecting communication module, establishing a communication link between UAVs and then interfacing the microcontroller and communication modules with the UAV kits are also included in the scope of this project.

Benefits of the Project

This project can be used for target detection, search and rescue using coalition of  autonomous UAVs, furthermore, what makes the coalition and it's applications more effective is the utilization of minumum resources and coalaition formation in minimum time, thus, where the human factor might fail the colaition of UAVs will succeed, also bringing some major inovation in the field of UAVs.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

After the microcontroller code, containing the main algorithm for UAV coalition based on UAV resources to eliminate target and estimated time of arrival to the target, is finalized, the microcontroller shall be interfaced with the UAV kits. For testing purposes the code is implementable for coalition formation of 3 UAVs with a specific number of resources vectors which will be used for elimination of target. The UAV which will detect the target becomes the leader UAV and transmit the required resources for target elimination. The UAVs with suitable resources and minimum ETA will form the coalition.
