Automation is rapidly growing in the present technology. So automation plays a vital role in the agricultural field which is helpful for the farmers. In the earlier days, the grass cutters were used manually handheld devices. Because of this, there was pollution and loss of energy as they used gas and petrol engines. Manual grass cutter is time consuming also. So the old grass cutters need to be replaced by automated ones, where the system is aimed at developing an autonomous solar grass cutter embedded with height adjustment, obstacle avoidance and path planning mechanisms. The autonomous solar grass cutter utilizes energy from the sun via photovoltaic panel to charge the battery for continuous performance of the solar grass cutter. Height adjustment technique is used to cut the grass on same level which look good. The obstacle avoidance and path planning for area covering of the solar grass cutter were achieved using image processing techniques. The efficiency evaluation of the machine is based on the primary set objectives of obstacle avoidance and path planning in terms of area coverage, energy consumption and machine intervention.

Project Implementation Method

Methodology:

  • Designing the model

  • Selecting and understanding the programmable Microcontroller

  • Learning and implementing the programming languages (e.g python, C, C++ and MATLAB)

  • Understanding and implementing the interfacing of different modules with microcontroller

  • Learning and applying the image processing techniques for detecting the grass and obstacle

  • Learning, designing and applying the optimum path planning algorithms

  • Designing and implementing the solar power system

  • Combining all the methods to make a final project 

Benefits of the Project

Social Impacts:

By replacing the traditional grass cutter with autonomous one the following are the social impacts:

Environmental Impacts:

Developing the autonomous solar based grass cutter emits a number of harmful toxic pollutants into air, including carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons etc.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • Image processing:

Image processing is a method to perform some operations on an image, in order to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful information from it. It is a type of signal processing in which input is an image and output may be image or characteristics/features associated with that image.

  • Path Planning

Motion planning, also path planning (also known as the navigation problem or the piano mover's problem) is a computational problem to find a sequence of valid configurations that moves the object from the source to destination.

  • Height Adjustment

Height adjustment is most often achieved by air or oil compression used for the "springs" of the vehicle – when the pressure is varied – the vehicle body rises or lowers.
