Our education system is rapidly migrating to the semester where the teacher has to check quizzes, assignments, and papers regularly in different classes.  It becomes very hard for the teacher to check every paper and focus on the lecture.  It makes the teacher exhausted and unable him/her to focus on the lecture quality

The project aim is to develop a smart scanner that will help out the teaching staff to overcome their load of checking quizzes and papers.  Initially, we will focus to check the quizzes or MCQ types question later we can extend the project to subjective based questions.  It is an inexpensive system that will be much handy in generating results.

This Project will prone to generate effortless results for the teaching staff.  The project contains a camera for capturing purposes and captures 60 pages per minute and computer vision algorithms that detect the images containing the key MCQs.

Project Objectives

Objectives of our projects are:

  1. Purchase the raw equipment to build the scanner.
  2. Design and build the motor to roll the papers and feed them to the scanner fast enough to quickly check the papers.
  3. Configure and tune the scanner to roll the papers and keep them in-tray for further processing.
  4. Incorporating and fix the visual camera to the scanner to pictures of the feed paper to later apply the computer vision algorithm to check the papers.
  5. Apply to computer vision algorithm to automatically check the papers rolled by the scanner and captured by the camera. At the initial stage, we use the project to solve the objective (multiple choice questions).
  6. Attach raspberry pi, a mini-computer to automate the process of feeding papers and capturing the images.
  7. Produce automatic results based on the key fed and make its results public in few hours.
Project Implementation Method

Our aim is to build a smart scanner to scan papers autonomously at the speed of 60 pages per minute. We apply the computer vision and machine learning methods to enable the smart scanner to detect the answers and generate results. Here are some implementation methods.

  1. We will use the cheaper paper motor roller to roll paper automatically.
  2. We will use the printer paper feeding mechanism to roll the papers with sufficient speed.
  3. We set the camera to capture the images of the question papers fed to the machine.
  4. The images will be fed to the computer vision and machine learning algorithm to check the papers.
  5. The paper images will be matched with the correct answer key and made the result online.
  6. The scanner process will be controlled using raspberry pi, a small computer
  7. Pages to be checked are kept in the paper tray.
  8. Transmission of visual data through the camera fixed on the scanner.

  1. The proposed device will quickly scan the document in no time that saves human time and effort.
  2. Increase the efficiency to concentrate on the teaching instead of checking long papers.
  3. The device will not only scan the document but the visual algorithms will help to generate the results automatically that helps improve the transparency and accuracy.
  4. The device will be cheaper than every teacher can afford to buy.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A smart and autonomous Scanner will be developed as a final deliverable. 

  1. The printer roller will be used to roll the paper automatically with a high speed of 60 pages per minute.
  2. The paper will be kept in the paper tray for a while to be processed further.
  3. The camera will be set to capture the images of the paper in the tray.
  4. Images will be fed to computer vision and machine learning algorithms to check and mark the papers.
  5. Character recognition software will be included to identify the paper.
  6. Web-based programming will be used to online the exam result.
