Gain access to remote areas in case of a natural disaster.

Explore new methods of securing packages during autonomous flight.

Decrease travelling time for parcels.

Make a sufficiently capable delivery drone within a limited budget.

Project Implementation Method

We will be designing the quadcopter frame ourselves and build it using suitable materials and tools. The base plates will be made from fiberglass, and the arms from carbon fiber. Dynamic models and control systems for quadcopters have been developed and reviewed by many researchers, with altitude control being possible with a simple PID controller. We will be using a pre-made flight control software and adding to it for our purposes, including the addition of control for a claw to hold a box containing the package to be delivered. According to the sources we consulted, 8-12s batteries would be ideal for our purposes, with matching speed controllers and motors that can withstand high voltages, to reduce wire currents, and 15-16" propellors. Lower currents reduce losses due to heat and allow us to use thinner wires, which also helps reduce weight.

Benefits of the Project

Drone delivery can eradicate the hurdles of conventional systems affected by city traffic, roadworks and fuel economy from the delivery cycle by travelling direct paths from vendor to customer.

It will be capable of transporting crucial amenities to affected parties in natural disasters.

With some adjustments, it could also be used to aid the 10 billion tree campain.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A drone capable of transporting a package of up to 5kg from one point to another within a given radius (dependant on flight time) autonomously with a landing pad where the battery can be charged and replaced.
