Project Summary

The water pollution is spreading rapidly due to chemicals, particles and micro-organisms (bacteria, virus and fungi). Contaminated water may cause cholera, diarrheal diseases, dysentery, typhoid, kidney infection, stomach disorder, skin diseases and other serious illnesses. This project presents the idea of designing water filtration & purification plant which is portable, easily maintained & installed, light weight and highly efficient in terms of filtration & purification. It is seven steps process which includes water collection, screening, coagulation, aeration, activated carbon, disinfection & storage. Coagulation and disinfection method is introduced which helps to drain the small particles, and chlorine or iodine is used in disinfection unit to get rid of micro-organisms. The water filtration & purification process is done by using electrical circuits, sensors, micro-filters, valve control, motors, level control, mixer, activated carbon, fiber filters & devices, so it is a complete automatic plant with high efficiency in terms of water filtration & purification.

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to transform the ideal water filtration & purification idea into automatic plant which will be portable, easily maintained & installed, light weight and highly efficient in terms of filtration & purification.  It is seven steps process and each step has its efficiency in purifying & filtering the water.

Project Implementation Method

The water filtration and purification presented in this project is seven steps process, which includes water collection, screening, coagulation, aeration, activated carbon, disinfection & storage. There are seven major steps to design the filtration & purification plant; the water is collected in first chamber, its pH level is maintained, the temperature is measured and water purification is examined at the time of collection. There are three sensors in the first chamber which measures the pH level, temperature and water level. The second step is screening in which the water is passed from micro-filters to remove solid particles. Coagulation is the third step; also called flocculation, in this step chemical treatment of water is done by chemical process in the water. The larger solid particles can easily be filtered by settling them down also called as sedimentation but it is difficult to filter the small particles. As due to chemical process in the water, small particles will turn into larger ones and can be filtered easily. There are two servo motors attached on the container which will mix chemical in the water to make the flock & filtered easily.  

Aeration is the fourth step in which the air bubbles are produced in the water through air pump attached below the container. The air bubbles will cause the micro particles to come up. Aeration brings water and air in contact with each other by introducing air bubbles through the water. The turbulence created by the aeration will help to remove the dissolved gases (such as carbon dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, iron, methane etc.) in the water and allow them to escape into the air through drainage pipe attached on the side of the container.  In the fifth step the water is then passed from activated carbons which make the taste & smell of water. As the water is passed through all the filtration processes it will be clear and clean but there are chances that it may contain micro-organisms (viruses, bacteria etc). So it is necessary to remove them by applying disinfection process. The most common process that takes place is the chlorination process. Chlorine is added in certain amount to ensure that all the bacteria and viruses are destroyed. Excess amount of chlorine affect the taste and odor of the water. In disinfection process we can also use Iodine to kill the micro-organisms. After this process the water is passed through the pipe where the pH level of water is checked. The sand filter is also used to get rid of the remaining particles, if there are any. In the last step the filtered & purified water is stored in storage tank where the pH level is compared with the first step pH level to determine the efficiency.
