Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject SummaryThe subject of our final year project is to develop an prototype of autonomous quadcopter with tracking and detecting ability, along with the quadcopter itself, which will use the onboard camera for detection using OpenCV. This project act as a helping hand towards significant problems caused by the outlaws, which are a threat to society, and will help the law enforcement officers to catch criminals to eradicate the violations from society.
In the present time, with congested streets, if a law enforcement agency wants to follow a suspect or a running away criminal, it can get complicated on land to chase someone as sometimes we cannot catch the criminal slips by our sight. Following them above ground from a significant distance with a high-quality camera can result without alerting the person in question. Another problem is security officers on stakeouts may get tired of waiting outside a suspect's known location. Using a quadcopter for motion detection in a particular area will get preferable results as it is not affected by fatigue or tiredness. One of the other issues to be addressed is that officers are prone to be bribed; using a technology that sends location back to its user and with a live feed is not prone to this problem.
Additionally, officers at stake out working as night watchmen are prone to experience fatigue and tiredness. They can use the quadcopter that can fly around the house's perimeter and raise the alarm if an unrecognized person tries to enter the premises. These capabilities give the quadcopter civilian, government, and military use. In military bases, soldiers guard the perimeter of the base or an area and use a quadcopter to make the base's security more effectively.
Project ObjectivesAn autonomous quadcopter prototype will possess the following capabilities:
1. Capable of tracking and following a given object.
2. Capable of detecting motion in the video stream.
Project Implementation MethodWe are intent to use a quadcopter for this project. We will use ready-made drone to process and execute python code (mainly models), so using it as a central processor for the quadcopter would just increase a little more stress on the processor. We plan to take the video stream incoming from the onboard camera and send it to raspberry pi for processing. According to the results, the raspberry pi will send the instructions to the quadcopter to adjust its movements.
Benefits of the ProjectThe project goal is to make a prototype of autonomous quadcopter for detecting people throughout the specified area and making it budget-friendly for the users. In addition, this project will act as a helping hand for the police officers and be implemented for military use.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final deliverables will include the prototype of the autonomous quadcopter. Moreover, a software program will be responsible for controlling the quadcopter's movement according to the live camera feed it gets from the camera embedded in the drone. The software program sends instructions back to the autonomous quadcopter to act accordingly towards a particular object or follow a specific person specified already.
