Project Summary

This project is about automatic power source selection  using Arduino. . The basic objective of this project is to select power supply form two different sources. Two power sources like three phases R,Y,B is used in this project. When all phases are available we want to feed the load from R. When power from R is not available, we want to feed the load from Y or B respectively for all. in this embedded system project.  In this automatic power source selection project we have used Arduino to switch between three power sources. According to availability of power sources Arduino take action and turn on and turn off respective relay.

Project Objectives

The project is designed to provide uninterrupted AC mains supply i.e., 230 volt to a single phase load. This is achieved by automatic changeover of the load from the missing phase to the next available phase in a 3 phase system

Project Implementation Method

The automatic phase selector is a device that links the load and the other phases and relay switches allowing the usage of the remaining phases where there is outage on the mains source without disturbing or interrupting the load. The device maintains constant power supply to the load by automatically activating the phases

Benefits of the Project

  1. Provides continuous power supply.
  2. Times required for switching between the phases has been drastically reduced.
  3. More automatic operation with the elimination of selector switch.
  4. Reduced circuit size and easier implementation with the use of relay driver switch.
  5. The problem of sparking between the selector switch and the phase connection does not arise.
  6. No manual errors.
  7. No mechanical contacts.
  8. Compact in size.
  9. High frequency switching technology.
  10. Can be used for all single phase loads.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A correct voltage level at result is provided to the required phase. In-short the uninterrupted power supply can be provided. The circuit also provides an automatic phase change in the system (i.e. R, Y, and B). Hence using this circuit human effort is reduced and the motive of phase change is achieved automatically with the help of advanced controller that is Arduino which leads to various industrial and commercial usages. In electrical panel body with full hardware of circuit which is attached in inside panel body.

Core Industry: Power instability in developing countries creates the need for automation of phase selection or alternative sources of power to back-up the utility supply. Most industrial and commercial applications are dependent on power supply and if the process of change over is manual ,not only considerable time is wasted but also the device or machine may get damaged from human error during the change over connections, incurring massive losses. Here is a digital phase selector that can be installed in residential and office premises where single-phase equipment is used. When any of the mains phase lines fails, it automatically selects the available phase line (out of three phase lines or backup lines).

Other Industries: The DIGITAL PHASE SELECTOR is an advanced technique which not only used for automation but also is one of the techniques for power quality improvement.This is a safe method of for changeover of phase. This digital phase selector also takes power from inverter which made this devise highly reliable and its compact size made this device to be used for house hold purposes. This digital phase selector is used for house hold purpose and by development of high power opto couples we can extend the use of this device in substations and power stations.

Need For Automation: In order to change from one phase to other manual operation is not possible as we are dealing with 3-? 415V supply which causes fire accidents during change over and leads to 3-? faults which is dangerous to electrical equipment. And more over manual changing is not possible at every time as identifying the phase of power interruption is difficult. To avoid all this we need automation which is done by “DIGITAL PHASE SELECTOR”. Here we do not need any manual work and we are no way concerned with the phase of fault as the digital phase selector automatically switches to the phase where the power is available.

Conclusions: The load demand is increasing day by day and we are able to generate power to the requirement and we are able to transmit power to the load centers with maximum efficiency and minimum losses. The major problem a consumer facing now a days is power interruption. Due to this power interruption lot of damage is caused in terms of money and sometimes to life. Due to this power interruption lot of time is wasted.
