Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryThe traditional approach of buying furniture is that a person visits the store and ponders over which furniture to buy and then finally selects it and brings it back to his house. This approach presents a few problems such as the user not liking the furniture after buying it or not being able to decide where to put the furniture or even the furniture not blending with the rest of the space in which it is placed. The vendors also face the problem of keeping track of the stock of all their items and keeping lengthy records regarding the pricing of the vast variety of items. To provide a solution for both the buyers’ dilemma and the vendor’s cumbersome record-keeping we have decided to develop an application that uses augmented reality to not only make things efficient but also fun. Our app will use augmented reality to transform the physical spaces of furniture shops into augmented reality stores.
Project ObjectivesAfter experiencing the lockdown situation in our country, the need to make basic necessities of life easily accessible from home arose. This application is being developed with the following objectives in mind:
- To make shopping from home easier.
- To make online shopping experience more exciting.
- To make record-keeping for vendors efficient and less tiresome.
- To introduce AR as an everyday tool in our demographic.
- To make shopping a safer experience in these uncertain times.
The application will be developed using the Unity engine and it will be developed for the platform of mobile devices, that includes all Android, IOS and Windows devices. The programming language to be used is C#. If the need arises for the vendor side of the application AR devices like the Microsoft Hololens or the Google Glasses may also be used. Otherwise, the application will solely be developed for mobile phones.
Benefits of the ProjectThe project will first of all introduce the common use of AR technology , other than that it will make the shopping experience of buyers more exciting, it will introduce a new form of marketing done through AR technology , lastly it will also encourage shopping from home which can prove very helpful in these uncertain times.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe finished application will allow users to view furniture on the mobiles and place them in any environment of their home through AR. This will help users in deciding which furniture to buy, where to place it and whether it blends in their home space saving them unnecessary trips to the furniture shop. Another feature on the finished app will be that the vendors will get all the information regarding an item (i.e. stock, price, material etc.) when the view the item through their camera.
