Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability that affects, among other things, the way an individual relates to their environment and their interactions with other people. They have difficulty in recognizing people’s facial expressions and giving expressions. Therefore, they are unable to interact in society through non-verbal communication. Due to this, an Android application that takes images recognizes facial expressions is proposed. The system will maintain a dynamic source of face image and after applying image processing techniques it will inform user about the expression present in the image. Moreover, a research will be performed to identify moods for autistic patients.
The primary objectives of this project are listed below.
Due to the ever increasing trend of using Android smartphones, the frontend or GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the project will be implemented on Android platform using native xml and the backend image processing algorithms will be implemented in python programming language using the open-source computer vision library opencv.
A list of potential benefits of this project is given below.
Each user will signup and login with a unique username and a strong password. Images will be captured on an Android smartphone using native libraries and sent to a server using a rest API. There on the server, image processing techniques will be applied to first detect a face in the captured image and then the underlying expression on the detected face will be recognized. After this, the results will be sent back to the Android smartphone and displayed to the user. The record of each user will be maintained in the database to track progress of expression recognition skills of each user.
