Artificial Hand for Disabled Persons
An artificial hand is designed for disabled people whose biceps and triceps muscles are intact and can generate EMG(electromyogram) signals. A light weight, thermoplastic, three dimensional hand with five fingers is designed which looks similar to human hand. Each finger has 3 joints for complete movement of hand. To make a hand movement the EMG signal generated are captured through electrode patches from the upper part of arm. The signal can be recognized by the microcontroller board. The microcontroller signals the servo motors according to the predicted gesture. The artificial hand is able to sense the EMG signals and imitate required movements like point, pinch, grab, pick, ok and victory sign. The left, right, up and down movement of the hand are also controlled by two gear motors installed at the base of the hand.
The main objectives of the project are
A three dimensional design of hand is made and according to the design artificial hand is printed. The artificial hand is made of thermoplastic. It has five fingers, and each finger has three joints for particular functions and gestures. The EMG signals are captured from the arm through EMG electrodes. These electrical signals are called the muscle action potentials. These signals are given to Arduino through EMG module. The Arduino sends control signals to the motors which move the fingers for the desired movement. At the base of the hand, two gear motors are used which are placed perpendicular to each other. An accelerometer is used to control those motors. These motors control the left, right, up and down movements of the hand.
Artificial hand is safe to use and can be implanted to a disabled person. The. It is light weight and doesn’t leave any stain. It can be used by person without limbs or those whose hand is cutoff by accidents.
