Project Summary

Several factors, like under ground water, heavy rain, overloaded traffic, and bad materials, can contribute to the creation of potholes. Government spend huge amount of money on road maintenance and repair. However, If these potholes are not repaired at early stages then it could be a major cause of road accidents, casualties, and vehicles breakage. To address the problem of pothole detection and reporting it to the concerned authorities, we will propose an android-based solution. Our proposed solution will not only detect the potholes on the road, but will also report it to the government agency for taking necessary actions. Our proposed solution will make use of smart phones devices to achieve the objectives.

In our Project the user is required to carry a smartphone in order to monitor road surface, providing that there is any problem relevant to the road stability such as pothole or dig. Then they will convey this information to the concerned authorities, e.,g Peshawar Development Authority (PDA). For tracking location of the pothole, we will use Google maps and GPS coordinates.

Project Objectives

The main objective of our project is to develop an Android-based application for pothole detection and reporting. Hence, our prime focus is to develop an efficient application to detect and report potholes

  • To design and develop an Android-based application for potholes detection using smart phones.
  • To report the location of the pothole to the concerned authorities.
  • To keep track of the pothole being reported.
  • To test and deploy the developed application.

Project Implementation Method

Our project will detect the potholes on the road, and then it will be reported to the government agency for taking necessary actions. Our proposed solution will make use of smart phones devices to achieve the objectives.

Similarly, for testing purpose, we will need to carry the smart phone and drive on road in a vehicle. Hence to check the accuracy of the application, we will need to perform some real experiments on
roads.

  • It will minimise the causes of road accidents, that happens due to potholes.
  •  It will minimise the damages caused to vehicles, due to potholes.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • Final Deliverable of our project is Android-based application
  • For programming purpose, we will use Java. All the source code will be written in Java programming language.
  • We will use Android Studio as development environmentnplatform. Android Studio is a software that allow you to build applications for android mobiles, android TV, android Tablets and android watches.
  • We will use Google maps for finding location of the potholes. Google Maps is an internet mapping provider advanced by means of Google. It gives satellite imagery, aerial images, road maps, 360 degree interactive panoramic views of streets.
  • We will use Amazon Web Services for the data storage purpose. Amazon Web Services in terms of storage provides scalability, data availability, security, and performance
